One more thing about the memory as well. This board has 4 ddr slots, but if you want to use all 4 at once you need to use registered memory. I think its worth it to pay a little more and get crucial or some other top brand. I overclocked a bit too high and blew 2 sticks of memory. Lifetime warrenty and I just paid for the $5 shipping back and I saved myself almost $200. As far as OC'in a XP I have no experience with that, but you can jack up the FSB to OC it since the multiplier is locked from the start..... just beware as a high OC screws up your pci cards and agp b/c they run off a ratio based on your fsb. I/E 100mhz fsb comps have a 3 times divider so they pci can run at 33mhz. 133fsb have a 4times divider. I have also heard that OCin your fsb real high shortens the life of your harddrives but I don't know why.

Actually, although Abit doesn't "officially" say that it can be unregistered, you can use unregistered RAM to get up to 4 GB of memory. Just make sure they're all the exact same type of RAM.

Personally, I can't recommend this motherboard. I bought it for $150 along with many of my friends a year ago, and mine is the only one still up and running. And mine is a pain in the ass. They burn out RAM sticks like crazy, and they are SO bitchy when you try to seat the RAM sticks - I've had to reseat 50 or more times before my system will post. And no, it's not cheap ram - it's Crucial.

How does it burn out RAM sticks? Overheating? Or are you overclocking them?

Added another tip: This board accepts RAM in a reverse order, so you start inserting it from Bank4 and then add to Bank 3, then 2 and 1. Odd, and worth a quick post for clarification.

Great motherboard, bought mine from compgeeks for $41 shipped a couple months back. The reverse RAM order thing really screwed me up. Also my motherboard had the CLEAR CMOS jumper set so it wouldn't allow me to turn it on. After I got these things cleared up its worked fine ever since. I have a Athlon 1800+ in it and did do the flash with this CPU with no problems. I was under the impression this motherboard only supports up to Athlon 2000+ CPU when flashed.

Quick question, can the extra IDE channels for the raid setup be used for regular IDE devices? I don't care about raid but would love to have a board that will allow each drive to have it's own channel. Thanks.

Nessism, yes indeed ... the RAID channels can be set up as extra IDE channels so you can add more drives.

Abit manual specifies that the RAID channels should be used for hard drives and the standard IDE channels should be used for any optical drives (i.e. CDRom or CDRW)

Zepper:

I was. I called them Monday about buying a cancellation, or
credit reject, since they said it would be hard to get more.
He said the best way to find out is to keep checking their site, as
there's no method to inform me.

Newegg has still refurbished KX7-333 with Raid for $61, shipping free. Apparently newer and probably faster motherboard. Only two left.

Sure you are, it is newer and faster than KG7.
This KX7 with raid is KT333 motherboard, made for new processors, no flashing needed. KG7 is an outdated 761 chipset that is good and stable but why would that be a deal when you can get a newer mobo for about the same price. Yes, it is newegg refurbished but they had more than 20 of them few days back therefore it came from Abit, and this KG7 didn't come out of store either, it is probably Abit refurbished as well.

Hey stevejst,
What is meant by "this KG7 didn't come out of store either, probably Abit refurb. too."?
These KG7 raid mobos are listed on the sites as NEW. If they are refurb. or used, site description must say so per FTC regs..

Ah, steve the threadcrapper has arrived. Any post that lingers around page 1 for a week and steve is sure to join the discussion. I won't link to his inciteful posts in other threads but, rest assured, they are bountiful and always negative. Steve, this is a brand new board, and Abit has now announced they are offering a three year warranty on their boards. Anyone worth their salt knows that Newegg offers plenty of refurb boards and they also know that for every success story, there's another report of a board DOA. Some of us don't like RMA'ing parts all the time, much less at ALL, and are quite happy with this "outdated" board. Yea, its so much slower, anywhere from 5-12% at the worst. This board can be tweaked to drop that 12% (at the MOST) performance gap also, and I doubt the fact that you have to flash the BIOS is going to scare away buyers who are buying components, and obviously work on their PCs', rather than a Dell customer, who is scared to even open the case. Steve, either buy one or move on ....

Only two left.

Wow .. we hafta flip a coin over who's the lucky devil to get a board ? This board was #2 on the CompGeeks hot sellers list last week .. the numbers speak for themselves ... hurry up and order one steve !!

$51+shipping for AMD761 chipset board with Raid.
$61 free shipping for KT333 board with RAID.
The first you need to flash, the second is as good as it comes. You tell me what is a better deal.

Even Bozo can flash a BIOS in seconds, but can't stomach another VIA
attempted Northbridge incarnation, over a super stable AMD761.
Newegg's used RMA rejects are a way overpriced gamble.

Buying outdated or even worse discontinued chipsets is no picnic. The chipset had a very short lifespan and bios updates quit coming. I guess it's all at the discretion of abit though, maybe they will take care of you. But when you pop your new video card in and it doesn't work- you'll curse.

Didn't do much cursing yesterday after upgrading my buddies PC with one of these boards and a 1600+ from Newegg. He picked up a Gainward GF4 4200 and after loading the various drivers, we benched it using 3Dmark2001. He scored 8197 (including 38 fps on Nature) at default speed on both the video card and cpu. With the Antec cooler he bought, there's plenty of room for improvement too. Total investment on the board and cpu was $107 !! Yanno what, I take that back , we DID curse. After seeing it running the benhchmark, we both said "Holy $hit !!!"
