ABIT KR7A-RAID Motherboard and Linux/*BSD

I just purchased a ABIT KR7A-RAID Motherboard with the intent to run Linux and *BSD on it. The problem is, I just ran across some articles of people having severe trouble running Linux on it. Not a good thing. From what I read, it seems if you turn the RAID option off, it works. However, with it on, the kernel crashes in the process of loading.

Does anyone have any experience with this motherboard and Linux/*BSD?

I can't install mandrake 8.1 on the KR7A
it's always hangs on the setup.
I use the 7.1 right now and it runs great.

It might be not the mobo problem though since I have
all 6 PCI filled up, maybe one of my device got conflict.

I tried it at ECS K7S5A and the 8.1 can be installed
but the LAN is not working.
Also I noticed that the 8.1 Installation is way slower
than the 7.1 and it also boot up slower.
I don't know it's the ECS probs or not since I can't
try it on the Abit, and those two are the only I have on
my desk right know. I plan on built a P4 Northwood
with ASUS mobo, I definately will try the 8.1 again.

ok - heres the info you need. alot of distros find the hpt 372 controller, dont know what it is, and just throw a kernel panic right then and there. the only distro that i know of that doesnt do this is SUSE 7.3, but you cant use the raid controller even in it until you go to www.highpoint-tech.com and get the drivers for it. they have released driverse for quite a few of the major distros, and if you know what your doing you should be able to get the driver from one distro to work with one that its not meant for. if SUSE isnt what your looking for, highpoint offers boot disks on their website to let you install various other distros of linux. so basically, go to highpoints website, grab your drivers, and your good to go.

I've got a KR7a-RAID and I've tried RH 7.2 and Mandrake 8.1... kernel panic with both even when doing HighPoint's install method of doing a "expert text update" install as per their faq on the Linux drivers. If I disable the Raid controller, all is well. Perhaps I'll go ahead and install the OS and then install the drivers and see if I can get it to work.

I should mention that I'm not even using the Raid controller... merely having it enabled in the BIOS is enough to produce Kernel Panic.
