Abit KT7 USB Problem

I'm setting up a Duron 700 / Abit KT7 for a friend. So far, this board has given me few problems (most notably getting a chrome orb to fit with the capacitors so close to the CPU socket!), but one that has me stumped is that I can't get the USB ports to work. The USB device my friend purchased is an optical mouse, which will work with the USB to PS/2 adapter, but it would be nice to get it working off of a USB port.

I've installed the VIA USB drivers that come with the KT7 CD-ROM, and I've also tried various combinations of settings in the BIOS (USB enabled, disabled, etc.), but nothing seems to work.

According to Abit's Web site, this board already has the latest BIOS.

The mouse works--I've tested it on my AX6BC Pro II ME.

Any and all suggestions are appreciated!

I also have a USB problem, though mine is a little different. regarding the extra 2 port USB slot adapter that plugs into the KT7-RAID header: whenever I plug in a USB device into these extra ports, my system locks up, even BIOS! anyone have a similar problem and know a fix? the 2 integrated USB ports, the ones by the PS2 ports, work fine, so USB in general is not a problem with my setup. I am running WinME, btw, but I don't see how that is relevant as my lockups occur even in BIOS. thanks.

Have you got Microsoft's USB patch for 98/98SE? According to an FAQ on KT7s, you need this.

You can get it
here

Can't tell you whether it works myself, as I don't have any USB devices (yet) or even the motherboard (going to get that and the rest of my goodies tomorrow).

Timco,

Thanks for the heads up re. the Microsoft USB patch. I downloaded it and gave it a shot; unfortunately, it did nothing.

I'm beginning to suspect it's a bad motherboard.

I'm having the same problem. It works sometimes but not consistently. When I plug my MS Intellimouse Explorer in it flashes then no light. I also plugged in my polaroid pdc 1100 camera but it crashes everytime I ask it to read the memory. I also plugged in a scanner same prob. I downloaded the via usb filter drivers but no luck. I'm going to read other threads and see if I can find the problem and post back here.

Well, the USB ports share an IRQ with PCI slots 4 and 6. If you have any "picky" PCI devices in these slots like an SBLive! card, you might try moving them into different PCI slots. That shouldn't really be the cause of the problem, but it could be worth a try.

ok, i did a fresh install of windows 98se. loaded (in this order): via 4in1 4.24a , that via usb 108 filter, MS usb update, directX 7.0a, radeon 3056 drivers, sblive! drivers, then latest highpoint RAID drivers, then latest 3c905b-tx NIC drivers. sblive is in slot 5, nic in 3. Same symptoms of usb mouse NOT working. sometimes it does work for five minutes, then craps out. sometimes it just doesn't work on reboot.

This only started after I added a second ibm 75gxp 30gb for RAID and reinstalled windows. According to http://go.to/kt7faq, everything should be cool. I have no idea what is wrong, and it is really starting to bug me. the ps/2 adapter works, but it really sucks compared to usb. Well, right now i'm switching around my card positions (I still have a adaptec 2930c to install also). I hope someone can shed some light on this, it is really getting annoying.

*giggle*. You people complain to much. If you can't handle the issues with building your own system....buy a cowbox. You have to realize that hundreds of vendors are making thousands of different products...and you expect them all to work together for a few bucks..*geesh* =]

Enjoy this time of things not working...all these problems are making you smarter and better thinkers if you can solve them...which makes you more employable in the future. So be happy...life is good =]

I have the same problem. USB ports not working. Tried MS patch, USB filter update... Nothing is working. The the Device Manager there is nothing about USB or VIA as shown in the manual. I will call Abit today.

hey navi -

do you even have this board?? i've done a loy of research about these problems and it appears A LOT of people have this problem too. there used to be a thread about it at apushardware's kt7 FAQ forum. it's not isolated. i have 2 friends who got this board around the same thime i did. ALL of us have this problem. My USB mouse stops working, my friend's scanner won't scan. i've tried reformatting multiplie times, installing newest VIA drivers and USB filters. I've tried booting with only the 'bare' essentials, moving PCI cards around, everything. don't say sh!t if you don't have personal experience.

I had the same problem when I tried the Abit KT7 (non-raid) board. When I plugged in the USB mouse my computer immediately locked up. Also I couldnt get the additional USB ports to work. I couldnt figure out what was wrong with it. Tried different drivers, reinstalled everything again.

It is a shame about the problems, because I tried the Abit board because I had so much problems with my Asus A7V. Hehe, I immediately took the board back to store where I bought it

At least my Asus A7V works fine now, together with a Voodoo3 Voodoo3 is great for UT!

Of course I have the board my dear sir. Why would I reply to a thread if it has nothing to deal with me.

1. Make sure the USB perph's are enabled in the bios. (An upgrade of the bios from UL 1.0 to UL 1.0.3 automatically disables this, I did it twice to make sure).

2. Windows 98 SE already has a good set of drivers for the USB chip sets so DON'T reinstall the filter driver

3. Yes, install the patch (the windows one)

4. Make sure you disable SB16 emulation. I have seen this quirk screw with multiple system at different times. Some are pretty funny. Yes you can get it work. But it isn't worth the hassle in 99 times out of a 100. This also takes care of the which slot do I put this IQR picky board.

5. EEP, USB mouse? I've built a few USB devices for a company I once worked for and still believe todays drivers are not mature enough. USB mice are bad bad bad unless you have a nice box house board which has been debuged for it. Stay with PS/2 mouse and keyboard at all costs. They work nice for port's, but the drivers are still okay. The moral of the story, don't use USB keyboards or mice on homebuilt machines regardless of your luck in the past

6. Have fun. Figuring out the quirks with your KT7 board and hardware is all the fun in the world

7. Don't be afraid to format and reinstall. Or better yet, clean install 98 and then ghost it to another drive and pull it back every time something wigs out. This way you can try multiple things in a very short period of time.

-Navi (48 hours later, and mine works like a charm)

Sorry if I appeared blunt before...but, trial and error with a homebuilt pc is what it is all about.

I re-imaged my win98 SE at least a dozen times or more trying different things. Another idea you may wish to try is to remove all non-essential hardware (a sound card isn't essential, as NIC, etc) and try installing software. If that works, add piece by piece back in. I used to do this with mac's when the PnP would get hosed.

Also, when installing the Highpoint drivers with win98 SE, chose the mass storage pci device which has the question mark as the one you are adding a driver for. The typical methods don't work to well.

I'll keep you posted as to what I come up with...enjoy the fun...

I had the same problem for a while and finally figured it out, for my system at least. It seems that IDE 4 and USB share the same interrupts with the via chipset. I unplugged my second hard drive from IDE 4, slaved it to the one on IDE 3 and now the USB works fine. Sacrificing a little hard drive performance, but I've got too much USB crap to just junk it all.

I had problems with this board. It all appeared to revolve around the RAID chip. Since I have the BP6 also and never could get the Highpoint controller to work on it, I decided not to waste too much time screwing around with this one. I returned it for a non-raid version and bought a promise card for $20 bucks. Smooth sailing every since.

I too think it mainly happens with raid boards.
With 2 non-raid boards here, never so much as the slightest clitch.

Currently have connected on one system:
Epson 860 USB printer
Astra USB scanner
Logitech Formula Force Feedback USB wheel
Intel USB internet camera.

Along with, Duron 600 @ 952mhz, SBLive, DLink PCI NIC, GF2 GTS (or V3 3k), Avermedia TV98, Win98ME (or Win98se), USR Sportster 56k ISA, BestData 56k External Com1 (teamed with USR for 112k), Canopus Total3d 128v (for 2nd monitor), WD 20.5g 7200, Sony 8x/4x/32x, cheap case w/250w supply.

hehehe...win2k...almost as funny as win me...you won't catch me using either of them until it runs as well as win98 SE. I can't see sacrificing 30% game performance for the next best (worst) thing.

OK, In my case I had a USB printer working fine. One day it just gave up the ghost and the USB hasn't recognized the printer since. HOWEVER, it recognizes my USB joystick. Go figure. The only thing I can figure is maybe a bad cable.
