Question - should I leave my BIOS settings as auto or manually change the PIO settings?
I'm running a 30.7 IBM 7200

gtd 2000,
Most HD's will allow the BIOS to correctly choose the proper Access mode, so I would leave the settings to Auto. Depending on the type of bios you have, some MB's (my old Soyo P3 board) has an option to detect the IDE drives, and gives you several different access methods.

Tesing my HD gives variable results as mine is partitioned.
Any recommended settings optimising HD performance?
I'm getting 17000+ and 19000+ for the partitions

IBM 45 gig and abit kt7a raid--sandra score 22,574. Sounds like you score is very good. Why do you think it is slow. The graph made it look to me like an excellant score.

I just downloaded the latest version of the software an ran the disk test. results were 21,547 compared to the benchmark ATA66 of 13,000. I am running a raid/0 with two IBM 30gig 7200 of the Abit KT7A. Seems like I remember there being an issue with Windows 2000 and the ata100 drives. Anybody know anything about that?

For W2K you need a registry fix to properly enable udma66 (disabled by default). You can find the file here in the fifth paragraph down.
W2k udma66 reg file

Also ATA100 will not be implemented until W2K service pack 2 is released.

Those who are getting 22000 or so in w98 and win me and about 15000 or so on w2k, you'll need the w2k patch for udma 100 ...
http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/Q260/2/33.ASP
Then if you search the windows knowledge base there is also a registry trick ...
http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/q247/9/51.asp
Even if you try the above two you may not manage to get it working. For some reaon changing from WW bios to WZ bios does the trick. This was reported in the KT7 & KT7A faq page forums at ...
http://www.apushardware.com/faqs/kt7faq/kt7faq.htm
... i have tried it and it works.

It is rumored that service pack 2 for W2K is coming out in mid April. This will hopefully take care of these issues.

With my Abit KT7 RAID, and 2x IBM 30,7 GB, I just got 43215 points in Sandra. This is in Win2k. I remember getting as most 26000 with a single drive, but this was on a very fresh installation - after all proggies were installed, and a couple of weeks downloading/moving stuff and so on with no defrags, it was at most at 24000. Same with my present RAID setup, which I set up 3 weeks ago: scores were about 5 % higher on the clean installation.

Edit: this is in RAID 0, of course.
