I'm new to using Raid so I have a question. I just purchases an Abit KT7A-Raid motherboard with hopes of putting in 2 Maxtor 40gig 7200 Hardrives in a Raid 0 configuration. 1 of the 40gig drives I got right after Thanksgiving. It had a sticker on the box that said 5 mb free. I just picked up the other last week. It didn't have the sticker. Anyways, I drive is 45g and the other is 40g. Will have a problem running these in Raid 0?

Thanks for any help!

Check the model#'s; the drive with the free upgrade is most likely a 45 gigger too! Better yet, if the drives have identical model#'s, then there should be no problem. You might want to make sure that they both are rated at the same speed(ie. ATA/100), though. Transfer rate symmetry is most likely going to be a factor in their compatability in a RAID setup. Good luck!

I'm not 100% sure, but if one drive is 45GB and the other is only 40GB, then the stripe set will only use 40GB on the larger drive. In other words, if the size of the drives is not the same, the stripe set will use the smallest common size.

I have similar setup with the same motherboard. The RAID will work fine. In the case you have 40 and 45GB drives your strip RAID will be 80GB. The larger drive is used only up to the capacity of the smaller one. It is common for Maxtor to get two different capacity drives (small difference) of the same model. I don't know why, but I have seen it a couple of times myself.

Thanks for all your replies. The model #s are different. They are both ATA 100 and 7200 RPM. I guess my main concern was if there was a performance drop because the drives are different sizes. 85gb would be nice, but 80gb at almost twice speed sounds even better.
