Abnormally High Temps

I have a P-3 600e on an Asus P3B-F motherboard and using Asus Probe(v2.03) I've noticed that my temps are abnormally high. At the normal 100 mhz bus my temp idles at about 40.C. If I overclock to 660 mhz I idle around 49-51.C!! If i over clock to only 720 mhz, I idle at 70+ C!!
This is with a Thermaltake Golden-Orb and an additional chassis fan at the front of the case (blowing air in of coarse) as well as fan over the CPU (I cut out a hole in the side of my case and put a fan blowing air out there.)
My room is usually chilly, I have an A/C unit it here.

What do you guys think, do some processors just run abnormally hot?? Any cooling suggestions? (on limited budget) I know that lots of people have O/C this proc to 800 and sit around 40.C!

What gives??

Make absolutely sure that all your cooling devices are properly attached and functioning.

Run a program like RAIN. Your CPU should not run that hot. Did you alter voltage settings?

Everything has been checked over multiple times. I'm using a generic slocket converter, i wonder if that might have anything to do with it?

Using thermal paste? Are you 100% positive that the heatsink is sitting flat on the cpu?

Positive, I've resat the thing three or four times now, With different layers of thermal paste for comparison.

The Golden Orb is really bad for overclocking. Just just can not exhaust heat as fast as the overclocking chips are accummulating. I bought 3 in hoping that they could cool down my peltiers and they were a complete disappointment. I have tested them and noticed that they are about 2X worse than the Alpha P7125 or the Vos32. Too bad too. They look very good.

Does your heatsink get hot while it's running? Or it's cold to the touch, a sign of a bad contact is if your heatsink is cold to the touch. I have the same motherboard but different cpu and my chip runs around 30C idle. Did you try another heatsink?

The orbs were scorching hot. They were hot to the touch. After 30 minutes of use, I could not even keep my finger for more than 10 seconds on the orb's sinks at all. The problem is the small fan that just could not cool the sink fast enough. These orbs are good for cooling down the video card though. I managed to overclocked my Leadtek verB Geforce to 165Mhz/345Mhz to get over 6K on the 3dmark2000.

My 550e with golden orb runs about 42c while running rc5. I dunno why yours would be so hot.

I used the orbs to cool down the hot side of 72W peltiers. Those peltiers chuck out a lot of heat. a 72W probably chucks out around 100W worth of heat, about 2-3 times more than a typical celeron.

Umm...

Hate to break it to you, but Golden Orbs are NOT intended to dissipate heat from a 72W peltier! They do their intended job perfectly, cheaply, & pretty damn elegantly if I do say so myself.

Don't knock them 'cause you tried to use them in a way they were never intended to be used in.

Holy Crap!! A 72Watt peltier on a Golden Orb... They're great heatsinks, but they lack the physical properties needed for good Peltier cooling. it would be much better to get an alpha, preferably a PEP66.

My 600E@901 ran smoothly at 28 degrees C. with a GlobalWin VOS32, great cooler, would recommend it to everyone with any Slot processor.

I know...I know....That is why I figured I used 2 orbs. I remember my Alpha P7125 could handle 2 72W peltiers and based on some reviews, they said the orbs performed worst than an Alpha. That is why I tag-teamed the orbs to handle 2 72W peltiers. Now I know. The Orbs' heatsinks did the job of sucking up the heat dissipating from the Peltiers' hotside. Only problem was, their fans are horrible for blowing away that heat. Like I said in other posts, the orbs are great for P3s and celerons and non-overclocked Athlons, but they are match for overclocking an Athlon even if you tag team them somehow.
One good use of the third orb (bought 3) is that I am using it now to overclock my Leadtek GeForce card. Even then, it gives only marginal improvement over my modded heatsink/fan (heatsink that came with ver.B Leadtek fanned by a 92mm fan).

I have a similar problem. my 600e on a p3v4x mobo runs at 122f with a stock fan. With a orb it runs at 108f much better but still high. I touched the orb and it is cold, seems like it has a good conection to the cpu and good quality thermal paste the stock fan and heatsink were also cold or luke warm. only thing I can think of is the themastat on my p3v4x is out of wack. downloaded the newest bios for mobo but didn't seem to help. any suggestions?

there are still problems with the p3v4x thermal readings... sometimes it has to do with the slotket(the asus slotket doesn't even read temps properly ) and sometimes its a bios issue.

My problems were resolved when I switched to the 1005 beta bios, using an Abit slotket.
