I ordered an Athlon 850 (OEM) and I think they may have just overclocked it and given me a 750/800. How is there a way to find out? I initially thought this when the core voltage defaults at 1.70. On mine, the core voltage defaults at 1.60.. the same as OLDER Athlon chips.

Post the numbers off the case of the CPU and also post what mobo you are using. It may just be that the mobo/Bios is not sensing the voltage right. Need more info...

The motherboard i'm using is the K7V and I have the latest BIOS (1007 I think)
I looked on the case and concluded since it said "AMD-K7850..BLAH" that it was an 850 BUT.. Why is my mobo detecting my core voltage wrong?

Have you tried WCPUID to check it. Post your results and I will check it out. Does the K7V have jumpers for voltage, or is it srtictly thorugh the BIOS. Also, where are you seeing this voltage reading, in the BIOS, or in a hardware monitor program in Windows?

As the speed of some of the Athlon 512K models increase, the voltage increases too. I dunno what the default voltage of the 850s are though...

From your WCPUID stats, everything looks right. I have a OEM Athlon 850 and the default voltage is 1.7v, I am not sure why yours defaults to 1.6v, unless there is a jumper set wrong or something. The default voltage for 800-900 is 1.7v I believe, and 1.8v for the 950 and 1ghz "classic" Athlons. I wouldn't worry that you have a remarked one because that was more with the slower ones being modded. The stepping ID of 2 means you have the latest revision of the "classic" Athlon which is a good sign it is not remarked.

Alright, well I'm getting this reading from the BIOS and I have all the jumpers set for "Jumperless mode." If I get an unsuccessful overclock it resets the BIOS and puts the Voltage at 1.6v.. Ahh well anyways how did you get your athlon to over 1ghz? I can only get mine to 900 even though the Alpha I ordered should be here any day now. I was thinking about getting a GFD too.

Ryangroovey- Incorrect, the default voltage on the 850 is 1.7v. I should know, I have one....

I can only get mine to 892! Do you think a GFD would solve this? My temps at 892 are around 90 ~ 95 farenheit.

If you can't get to more than 1ghz on a 850, something is wrong. I've noticed that many of these chips have reached 1.1 ghz.

Well should I try to o/c by setting the jumpers instead of being in "Jumperless" mode? I put the FSB to 105 and that's all it's booting at at the moment.. 107 POSTS sometimes and 110 won't even POST. BTW I have the Core Voltage at 1.70 and I tried to up to 1.75/1.80 for 110 FSB.

frogg: Have you considered a GFD? It may be that your particular set-up may just not be stable over 105-110FSB...this is not that unsusual. First, what are you using for cooling? If you got a GFD, you could overclock via changing the multiplier and messing with the FSB is not necessary. The other benifit is that your CPU will probably run cooler with the case off. The case just traps hot air inside and doesn't allow any airflow over the PCB itself. I just cracked the case on my 850 and put on a better heatsink/fan combo, and it has stabilized my system noticeably. Your core may be able to handle higher speeds, it may just not like high FSB speeds. With the GFD, you could find out. Good luck..

Ok thanks.. Cooling is NOT the problem.. I'm running at around 83-87 degrees farenheit. I have 8 fans and an Alpha cooler. I might try a GFD though.

OK if I did decide to try a GFD which one would you recommend? I've seen the Afterburner but it's above my budget. I've also seen two others (forgot the names) but I want to know from people who already have them to see if they like them or not.

I bought a Leufkens and like it. If I were going to do it all again, I might look harder for one that didn't need to be plugged in to the power supply. I bought it at millisec for 28 bucks.

I just ordered the TD2, it is $45 bucks, but that includes shipping and it does not need a p/s connection. Athlonoc.com reviewed this card favorably, so I picked it up. Here's the link..

http://www.athlonoc.com/gfd_tweaking%20device2.htm

It's super small and no p/s hook up..it looks good to me. I have heard that most GFD's perform the same, it just that quality and features vary..hope this helps.

From what I see from your WCPUID, you have Samsung L2 cache. The H4 indicate Samsung/Motorola/SEC cache. Heard people can only run their cache at 350hzm so try to reduce your cache to 1/3 if you want higher speed (900 or higher HMZ)

p.s. S6 in WCPUID indicate 2/5 L2 cache in NEC cache.( I did some research )
