ok, i've got an amd cpu 1.33gig
when taking out and installing the cpu for a few times.
there is a tiny bit of damge around the side.
it was fine until yestarday (note that it used to not hang in windows now that it hang in windows for some reason, used to only hang during 3d games)
so will that affect the stability if it still works>
also i myself have another 1ghz amd cpu, that has in the corner a bit comes out.
however its perferctly stable..
and this damage seems to be more than the 1.33 ones.
so any comments about the damage on the cpu affecting the stability????
thx

It crashed in 3d games before? Then how was it okay .

How much of the edge did you crack? You could have potentially damaged it, or you could have simply removed a chunk of the contact surface which could be hindering cpu cooling.

ok.
before when it crash on games it could be the problem of the case coolling and the power supply.
now that they are fixed after the change of case and new power supply (enermax 350W)
and until today.
windows started to crash.

Just out of curiousity what was your power supply before, and what was your cooling setup before and after.

what is your HSF coz, my system always crashed..when i first put it together it... the problem was on my HSF it was the retail HSF that come w/ my TBird.. and did you overclock it ???
what are your CPU/mobo/room temperatures.. do you use airconditioning in your room...

this is my temps when my system used to crash..
CPU=80C (woohoo !!! )
mobo=34C
room=vary from 20~25C

i changed my HSF...all better
i'm running W2K on my work partition
and Win98SE on my gaming partition
and one more partition for LINUX RedHat 7,1

it always crashes in WinME,and Win2K
no probs on my Win98SE and Linux.. (this is before i changed my HSF)
now i'm using the ThermalRight SK6 w/ Delta Fan and my CPU temps dropped to 47C full load

oh yeah 2 of my TBirds are chipped too... but no problems
although my chipped Duron always locks up after POST..

ok, its currently using a ThermoEngine V60-4210 fan, which is rated up to 1.4ghz.
however, i am not sure whetether its provide enough cooling to it or not, so in the cooling section, i've posted something about it ready.
however.
just tested.
running 3dmark 2000 @ 1024 768 benchmarking for about 2hours already.
the machine is still running stable no crashes at all.
btw the old power supply was from years back (probably 1999) a 250W SPI, now the new one is a enermax 350W that i just upgrade.
the cpu fan since i got the cpu is the same 1 as above, but however because the old case was from my brother's old p2 400 computer, plus its one of those SHORTER ATX ones(that arent as tall, and the power supply BLOCKS air on top of the cpu fan) its not replaced with a typical ATX fan that has more room than before(its an AOPEN CASE, wanted to get something more better, however becuase we live in australia, they are kind of limited) there is a fan on the front sucking in air.
and there is not CASE fan that is next to the cpu, except the power supply fan (2 fan there is, but dont seem to be very cool) and also a slot cooler to suck hot air out of the heatsink of the 3d card, a gf2mx it is .

is it a thermoengine with a stock fan? or with teh delta 38CFM fan?

The temp readings are skeewed with the thermoengine, so your "max norm temp" would be lower than iwth other heatsinks.
