Actually - there's been so much "hoo-hah" over this whole thing that I'm giving serious consideration to just bagging the idea. People with their panties in a bunch over competition, security, oil prices, dogs and cats living together...

I personally see little difference between assimilating 1000 machines, or one machine with 1000 processors. No one gripes about my labs, or our teammates labs cranking out those keys, but for some reason - a whole lot of people are real irritated about throwing keys into the mix during burn-in on these servers. Que sara-sara...

I fully expected a rash of new "Junior Members" with odd sentence structure to descend on the forum with all sorts of objections to the thought - what I wasn't prepared for was the TA whining. I had erroneously assumed that the "T" in TA - stood for TEAM.

I'm going to be traveling for a few days, meeting with CPQ execs on the east coast. During that time I'll think about it, but at this point in time, I'm not particularly amused.

Sigh... I'm pretty surprised that TA members (or anyone, really) have an objection to this. I mean, the total number of blocks you're talking about are not all that huge when compared to the scope of the project. I think someone said that doing a five day burn-in on those thousands of computers would shorten the project by a year... which is complete nonsense, of course. Dan's total block output would set the project ahead by about twelve days. Dnet currently does 40 million blocks per day, and Dan's total block output for the entire burn-in process would be about 500M.

As far as competition with the DPC's go, they're beating us by nearly a million blocks a day, and growing. If on average Dan is running a thousand of these computers a day he would be completing about 1.25 million blocks per day. That would put us ahead of the DPC's in the dailies, and pretty much end their chances of catching us in the overalls, but at the rate they're assimilating they would probably pass us up in the dailies again. And it wouldn't be that long before they did it, either.

But, it's all Dan's decision. I know I for one am hoping you decide to go through with the project, Dan. Good luck

If I were the DPCs I'd look into buying a bulk sale of diapers, they'll need 'em after they see the keyrate of TA once this [hopefully] is in the works.

Who knows, though. DanC might not want to implement this because of everybody in TA not caring enough. There's guys who will probably stop assimilating because of this, and think it's all over. IT'S NOWHERE NEAR OVER! This might not even go through! Look at the stats right now - who's winning in the daily stats? We need to get more juice!

Get out there and assimilate!!

DanC,

most of the "whining" I've seen is from the DPC people that visit. Did you really expect anything else from them? I know I'd be whining (and crying) like a baby if the DPC suddenly announced they were adding that kind of firepower!

As far as this being the end of distributed computing? ... Huh? Did I miss something? This is EXACTLY the sort of thing that distributed computing is for. Using the spare cycles of otherwise unused computers! These servers have to go through load-testing before they can be sent out (Compaq would be fools if they didn't, and if they have people like DanC working for them they can't be complete fools!) and RC5/OGR are excellent CPU load testers. They are small, stable and can stress the hell out of CPU!

Hey, at one time, I was a "heavy hitter." Before my herd was slaughtered, I was doing 50-60k blocks a day. And that was back at the time that P2-450 was the biggest thing going. Now, I have a meager (comparitively speaking) herd, but I still feel like a valuable member of the team. Sure, there are people that vastly out-produce me, but that's not the point. This team (and the people on this team) are like a family, and THAT is why I come here!

*Sniff* Now I'm getting all emotional. *Sniff*

I LOVE YOU GUYS!

JHutch

PS. In conclusion, DanC, don't be a tease and make this happen. DPC objections be damned!

maybe create a new email address just for this testing?

or several of them, that way when the burn in is over, they arent on the top of the overall stats list either, and the points wont go to a miniteam. get something like "DanCs_Big_Burn_of_2000@yahoo.com and dump them all there.

Ok, we may sound like whiners , but just put the thought of all those cracked blocks aside and take a look from an objective side.

Can't you see we have a point here?

I am not saying you dont have to assimilate those pc's, just go ahead, sooner or later u will find out what will be the problem yourself.

Well, no. I don't think very many people will quit just because they can't be the number one overall. If it matters that much to them they wouldn't be doing RC5. If they _really_ want to be number one overall, they'd do Gamma Flux, or even OGR. If you think we'll have people leaving TA to do something else because they can't be #1 on the team, then I think you're even more wrong. The biggest crackers on the team are often the ones who have the most team spirit, so anything that is good for the team they'll like.

I guess I could be wrong, but I don't see how this would hurt TA or distributed computing.

man, if the DPC's are acting this way before something like this happens, i can sure bet that they are very sore losers. QUIT WHINING AND GO OUT AND DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT! i can't believe that you guys would be this bad...

Hey Dan, i'd be very dissappointed to see all this power go to waste. JHutch was right, this is what distributed computing is. it won't kill the competition. We are getting beat by one million blocks a day sometimes by the DPC now, if calculations are right, then this would promote better competition and even things out. Like i said, i will be very dissappointed in you if this opportunity goes to waste. Forget what the DPC's say, they are just acting like whiny little brats right now that are scared because they don't want to loose their edge on us right now.

DanC, GO FOR IT! I'm personally getting sick of this so called competition arguement. Whenever we go faster then DPC they come out whining that we are ruining competition. When they are winning, then their Ha Ha, we're kicking your butt. As Engine also stated DPC is blowing TA away in the dailies. For competition sake, how is it fair for, lets say a Ferrari (DPC) doing 150mph compared to a Saturn (TA) doing 103mph (car choices randomly selected)?? I'm ready for the dual jet boaster afterburners to be added!

Hey DanC, if you give me a flight ticket and a clearance pass, I will help out getting the mass asslaminated!

Edit: I knew I should have pulled out the dictionary before posting.... Now I need more coffee.

Brad..

Hey DanC,

I also believe that the T stands for Team. You can amuse yourself by poking fun at me forever if that means you going through with this assimilation. Just leave my girlfriend out of it though or I'll open a major can of whoop-ass on your trouts!

Or you might go here for a laugh.

Well, in the interest of "Competition" lets say DanC doesn't do this.
Then I would expect (in the interest of Competition) that the DPC cut back their rate to no higher than TA's.

Yeah, like that's going to happen

All this whining from the DPC (and DanC hasn't even started yet!) is making me lose what little (very little) respect I had for the DPC.

I can see today is going to be one of those "whiny" days here at AT Forums, so I'll see ya"ll tomorrow.

Dan,

You should create a new e-mail and call it "The Hare". That way number 1 and two in the overall stats will be the tortise and the hare.

personally, i think it is a great idea to get all those computers cracking for a little while. and i hope everybody remembers, TA is a team, and this team does more projects that just RC5. If you feel like you can go on cracking RC5 after this then join seti or whatever floats your boat, just don't leave team anandtech. If we all stick together then we can beat anybody who stands in front of us.

I have to admit that I've not been on the boards for a while, so I'm not totally up to speed on this topic, but it sounds intriguing.

Heck Dan, I'd go for it if it's not going to be too much trouble for you to manage. It's not going to do jack to "competition" other than give other folks more to shoot for. Yeah, sure it might shave a month or two off the time for finishing RC5, but that sounds mighty good to me.

In short, over the years I've seen the ebb and flow of "super" crackers and I've never seen it do anything but benefit both the team and the project.

The important thing is to have fun with it, eh?

DanC,

Maybe set the client to RC5,OGR instead of RC5,OGR=0. Just in case D.net can't start RC5-72 fast enough.

does the client default to ogr no matter if rc5 is before it? i thought you had to put in ogr=0 to get the thing to crunch rc5

If all you do is set the priority, without changing any thing else, then the client will crack all the RC5 blocks and then crack all the OGR blocks and then update. If you set any of the options that let you update frequently, then your RC5 buffers will never exhaust and you will only be cracking RC5.

Narcy --> What's wrong with a DPC??? I did not start this thread to be considered a DPC-pig, it's some serious Stuff in my opionion! The numbers we heard from some TA members were 500M/week, and that's something else than (engineer's calculation) 1.25M/day... if it's like Engineer predicts... My objections can be considered "not written". My concerns weren't for DPC, but for all distributed.net participants!

Anyway: Good luck guys, cya! (or come over to Holland.... I've got more than enought beer in the fridge )

The problem is that the DPC didn't mind when the huge disparity in numbers was to their advantage. When it looks like that balance may tip in our favor DPCs came out of the woodwork here crying "Foul!" Buckle up pal, you're in for a bumpy ride.

Give 'em hell Dan.

what competition anyways?

TA's goal was never to be in a race with the DPC's, it's been to take #1 and dominate

and since DPC is 2 or 3 spots behind us, why should we care???

you guys had your mega flush, now let us show you how its done, TA style.

Ok, now I'm pissed (see what you did?).

Listen, when you little sissies had your little fun with MF6, did we come to your forum and bitch like a Ho? I don't think so.

You had your fun, now it?s our turn. So shut the F*CK up if you don?t like it. :|

There are lots of nice DPCers out there, and this is in no way directed at them. Just those whiney loosers.
