? about hard drives.

I have three ide hard drives and I think one is dying. I want to add a sata drive, which I have 2 slots for I think. Can I use both types of hard drives or will the sata drive take over one of the IDE channels. I have an asus p4p800 deluxe.

The SATA bus is independent from the PATA one so you can use both types of drives concurrently. A SATA drive will not consume a PATA port.

You can have all the SATA and PATA (what everyone calls IDE) ports filled and use them all side-by-side without issues.

it shouldn't as the ide controller is seperate from the sata controller, however sometimes bios has an option for sata to appear as an IDE drive in which case i believe more slots load up on the bios screen instead of the sata controller loading after the boot screen, you shouldn't have any trouble

but be careful cos depending on your mobo you may need to do some voodoo to get it to work. Also, for me, at least, it was hard to install windows on a SATA hdd if there was an IDE...It wouldn't let me so I had to detach my IDE to get windows install to stop ignoring my SATA hdd.

To be sure, why not buy @ a local store so you can easily return it if something goes array?
