I was at the entrance to my work and a women dropped by some small magazines titled "Awake!". She simply asked that we put them in our break room so that people could read them. I figured it was religous magazine and no big deal. I didn't have a problem putting them in our break room. But, before I could one of the ladies I work with stopped me and asked who they were from. I said I didn't know but that I thought they were some religous magazines. I asked her and if she wanted them and she said she'd look at them. A minute later she gave them back and said she didnt want them because they were from Jehovah's Witnesses. I asked her what the big deal was and she said "I don't accept anything from Jehovah's Witnesses!" I asked her what is wrong with JW and she said that she doesn't agree with what they believe so she doesn't want their information. I asked her what her religous preference is and she said Christian. I'm Catholic so I asked her if she would accept something from a Catholic and she said sure. I also asked if she would accept something from a Mormon. And she said she would accept it from a Mormon before she would from a JW. I was still a little confused, so I asked what was so different about JW and she said "They are just different." And my response was that most Christian religions are different but she would still accept something from them. Her response "Jehovah's Witnesses are more different." WTF does that mean? My boss then walked in and joined the conversation (he is "Christian" also) and he pretty much agreed with the other lady.
So what is the deal with Jehovah's Witnesses? Are they Christians or what? Are they innately evil? Whats goin on?

I wouldn't have any problems with them if they'd stop knocking on my damn door at ungodly hours! Like 8am on a Saturday!

Well, most people hate Jehovah's witnesses because they always get bothered by them. The deal is, they believe there are only X number of slots in heaven. For every person you convert to the religion, you get points, so the people with the most points get the heaven slots. I'm sure this is a gross simplification of it, but that's all I know.

Dare I ask what they witnessed Jehovah doing?

There were some religuous types coming round knocking on doors last weekend, but I ignored, mainly because I didnt want to waste my time answering the door when I knew straight away i wouldnt be interested.

Yeah, but I've found that they do a pretty accurate job of describing the basic beliefs of the "mysterious" religions.

man that site is so biased, you can hit the jw's site at www.watchtower.org.

OHH and btw, JW (most atleast) dont want to go to heaven, there are 144000 slots in heaven and thats it, and only those will get in, everyone else who does good and follows JW teachings will live in paradise on earth not heaven.

It says on that site If you ever leave the Jehovah's Witness organization, you are considered an apostate and are to be shunned.
What exactly is an apostate?

EDIT: I also found this- Additionally, the Jehovah's Witness organization requires of its members regular weekly attendance at their "Bible Study" meetings where they are repeatedly indoctrinated with anti-Christian teachings. This is done by reading the Watchtower magazine, following along with what it says, reading the questions it asks, and reciting the answers it gives. In other words, the Watchtower Organization carefully trains its members to let the Organization do their thinking for them.
Don't the members realize what is happening?

apostate: to my knowledge you are considered a "false prophet" not in the exact sense, like a wolf in sheeps skin or something like that, however, if you are expelled from the organization you can always come back, its not like youre flogged or anything like that, but you loose some "priviliges"

I believe the reason many Christians will not accept JW or LDS materials is based on the instruction found in the Second Epistle Of John, verses 7 - 11...

"7. For many deceivers are entered into the world, who confess not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh. This is a deceiver and an antichrist.
8. Look to yourselves, that we lose not those things which we have wrought, but that we receive a full reward.
9. Whosoever transgresseth, and abideth not in the doctrine of Christ, hath not God. He that abideth in the doctrine of Christ, he hath both the Father and the Son.
10. If there come any unto you, and bring not this doctrine, receive him not into your house, neither bid him God speed:
11. For he that biddeth him God speed is partaker of his evil deeds."

that i remember, were things like being able to answer questions in a meeting, or being able to help out with the duties around their meeting place, simple things, but in the JW church its those things that improve your standing with God and within the Organization.

Wow...they refuse to vote?!
So if the country (in some bizarre theoretical world) was a majority of JWs, and somehow an insane pseudo Nazi was running unopposed and his major platform plank was the extermination of all JWs, they'd either leave the country or allow this guy into office simply b/c they don't believe in voting...

Weird....I knew a little about JWs, but that's one fact I didn't...
