About the ports

I read everyone ranting and raving about the UAE controlling our ports and how dangerous this is for America!!! Well I am afraid the media has once again been greatly misinforming the public. The UAE Company, DP World is not taking control of our ports but rather terminals within the port itself.

To give you an idea of what as terminal is, I will explain it with an example. Say I bought some land along the water that was within the New York port authority's jurisdiction. I could then decide to build a terminal that would consist of cranes, warehouses, truck stops, etc., everything I would need to load and unload cargo from ships. My terminal would not run the security of the port, all I would be trying to do was advertise my terminal to get cargo companies to choose me to unload their goods. The Coastguard and the port authority can and will check any ship that were to come to my terminal. I would have no say in what ships can and cannot be checked.

This is exactly what DP world has done. They bought out a P&O and will know run their terminals within the six U.S. ports. They are in no way taking CONTROL of the ports. This story has been blown way out of proportion.

I feel ashamed our media has blown the story so out of proportion. Hell, 5/6ths of these ports are already owned by our enemies, what would one more hurt?

I have no idea who owns all the terminals within the U.S. ports. I'm sure some are American companies while others are probably Chinese, Japanese, German companies. I can tell you that the security before 9/11 was terrible. Post 9/11 security has made great strides but is no where capable to search every container no matter if it goes to an American terminal or a UAE terminal. If a container were to pass through with a bomb inside it could just as easily get though an American terminal as it could through a DP world terminal.

Let me restate my comlaint. It deals with the media misinforming what DP World will be doing within the six U.S. ports. This idea of a middle east port company owning terminals in American ports does make think of increased security issues. We will see what happens and I have yet to make up my mind on the issue becuase I believe more truthful information is needed in order to properly evaluate the situation.

The only reason this story stirred up so much attention is because the UAE is an Arab country. People in the US are afraid to come out and say it, but really, it's Arab-phobia that's causing all the problems.

The politicians will never admit it, but it's racism.

if it didn't have Arab in the country's name it wouldn't get half the attention

It doesn't matter who runs our ports, as long as we continue to maintain the criminally negligent inspection standards we have enjoyed since 9/11.

duh, what kind of reaction do you suppose we would get if we took over say 6 of egypts ports...assuming they have 6 of course.
I'm sure it would be a moslum lovefest with no racism at all

edit: and bye the way are there no american companies that can run these ports or is it just a way of rewarding countries who please us?

Who's our enemy? Iran? Syria? I don't consider China an enemy, that's for sure...
