Ok, so I was lucky enough to get in on the AMD 64 3200+ and Asus mobo bundle. I'm about to try the installation. I've never built anything other than an Intel system, so I'm just wondering if there is anything specific I should be doing. Also, do I have to do a fresh install of XP after I install the cpu/mobo? What about drivers? I read in a different thread here that there is a certain order in which the drivers ought to be installed. Is that so? And where can I find the correct order of what to install?

Here's what I'm putting together, should it matter:

AMD 64 3200+
ASUS K8V SE Deluxe mobo
1024 MB Crucial RAM
2 Maxtor 160 GB hard drives
Audigy 2 Platinum sound card
GeForce 6800
Pacific Digital DVD+RW
Sony CD+RW

Thanks for your input.

You're better off installing from scratch. That'll eliminate potential weirness.

My understanding (from that other thread I just started ) is to install

XP
Service Pack 1 (or 2 when available)
Motherboard drivers (VIA Hyperion 4 in 1 drivers in your case)
AMD CPU Driver
Direct X 9.0c
Nvidia Forceware driver
other drivers and Windows update stuff

If you're pulling updates off the web with a broadband connection, then you might need to install drivers for your Ethernet chip first. I'm going to install Service Pack 1 from CD (plus I'll be using a modem for Windows Update), so that won't be an issue in my case.

Yeah I'd put on the firewall and antivirus before connecting to the internet. At least a router with NAT.

^ agreed. The Resources page of that building guide has links to some free firewall software, free antivirus software, and other stuff that you might want to burn to CD so you have it on hand before connecting to the Internet*. If you don't have a router, but would like one, I like the Netgear RP614 that I got for my little sister recently. For about $45, I think it's worth it.

*when I say "connecting to the Internet," I don't mean firing up Internet Explorer... I mean simply having a live network connection between your NIC and your modem, period
