I need some advice guys. The overclocking successes of the 1.6A are too much for me to ignore. I'm about to ditch my AMD setup and go back to Intel.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

The 1.6A is the best overclocker, correct? Do I need to look for any particular steppings, batch #s, Costa vs Malasia, OEM vs retail, etc?

What is the consensus on the best board, considering I want the best combination of stability with overclocking results?

Tx very much any advice.

1.6A is supposedly the best overclocker but i've encountered duds of both the 1.6A and 1.8A variety so your mileage will definitely vary... DO NOT let people make you believe that any kind of OC is GUARANTEED...there have been plenty of people in this forum who have moaned about having "bad chips"...it's all luck...every chip i've gotten has been able to hit different fsbs and ironically enough my 1.8A is the best overclocker, which goes against the majority of users out there

I don't think you can go wrong with an ASUS board

*i suggest you go through all the northwood threads...there are alot of threads out there...some with upwards to 200-300 posts already, people keep making new threads and they die in about a day

RPR,
I just upgraded from a T-Bird 1.4 to a Intel 1.6a and Asus P4B266-c. So far I'm very happy with the upgrade. At first I could not get a good overclock. After checking some things and removing my network card I'm running stable at 125fsb @ 2000ghz. I've got the AVC Sunflower heatsink & fan and it's running 41c idle and about 43 to 44 after Q3 or RTCW. This is still at standard voltage. I may try for more later but I'm happy now with a 400mhz overclock. I've got a very quite, smooth and stable system which is what I was after. Thursday I just ordered another P4B266-c and a 1.8a to make into my main system so it will be interesting to see how it goes. Nothing is certain but that is part of the gamble and fun of overclocking. Tinkering with the system to get the most you can out of it. Good Luck.......

I have a hard time justifying a NW 1.6A when a 1700+ can be overclocked so easily, too.

Tx for the responses. I'm struggling with the motherboard selection though. If I already have Crucial PC2100 DDR, do I stand to gain anything by going with a P4S333 board over a P4B266 board?

I would recommend the P4S333 over the P4B266-C that you can get from Newegg. There is still a problem with USB on the -C version and overclocking. After you hit so high a fsb, a usb device will lock up your system and not allow a boot. If you want to spend the extra money and buy the plain P4B266, it comes with USB 2.0 ports that don't seem to have any issues, but is like $40 more. My friends P4S333 hasn't had any problems with USB all the way to 150 so I don't think it shares in this issue.

Tx...didn't know that about the P4B266-C. I was leaning towards that too because I don't need on-board sound and LAN.

However, I know I'm in the minority here, but I'm not a big fan of Asus. There boards are generally overpriced, if there is a problem/glitch in the initial release it rarely gets resolved, and their tech support is non-existant.

Any recommendations for any non-Asus P4 DDR motherboards?

<< Some of you guys have to much $$$...LOL... im still stuck on my p3. >>

or spends too much portion fo their income on computers. I've talked to a guy who says his roommates pays half the rent, buy cheap clothes, buy cheap shoes, don't go out alot, drive a POS car to save money, then spends the balance on computer and other nerdy paraphernalia.

I'm still stuck on my PIII 600 too. My T-bird Athlon 1.4GHz machine is broken.

Anyone on the web sell pretested cpus guaranteed to overclock (I know they'll cost more, but if they are less than a 2.0/2.2 GHz P4, they may be worth it)?
I know PCNUT sells overclocking bundles, but I'd just be looking for overclockable cpus.

Thank,
-AJ

I sold off my T-bird 1.333 to pay for my 1.6a and motherboard. I will do the same and sell my 1.4 T-bird to pay for the new 1.8a and motherboard. There is always somebody at work or through somebody I know that want's a cheap upgrade. I sold my 1.333 stuff and it covered my upgrade. It's a hobby that some people enjoy tinkering around with. By the way I have a very nice car also.
Ajay,
You may try e-mailing Humphrey at PC Nut to see about buying just a chip. He is always very helpful with questions and stuff.
Good luck..
