So, I have updated about 20 PCs with Windows 7 pro 32bit but I need to order 30 new PCs and we use newegg Business. I have narrowed it down to a model but it only comes preinstalled with win7 pro 64 bit. So, my question is if I buy these, wipe em out and install win 7 pro 32 bit from an OEM copy, will the 64 bit license work? I have dell oem win7 discs in 32bit and am hoping i can install it on the 30 HP pcs and use the license from the new HP pcs.

Yes the keys will work as they are not tied to the bitness of windows (32 or 64)

The only question would be if the dell media would work. It would most likely install, but will not automatically activate and you would need to use the key that is on the machine(which you know), but may not activate over the internet and would have to do the phone activation. Now this would be ok for 1 or 2 machines but for 30 it would get tedious.

I would get the Microsoft media and not worry about using the dell media

Using an OEM key on a retail Windows install will require phone activation.

Since your using the disk from one major OEM manufacturer (Dell) to re-install windows on computers from another major OEM manufacturer (HP), they'll most probably activate over the internet no problem after you put in the proper key.

I'm pretty sure I've done this in the past without having to resort to the phone, just not in the quantity you're doing.

no they work, you can download all legit copies of windows 32/64 from the Microsoft digital river links.. ill supply it here. Best part is use the windows 7 dvd tool @ http://www.microsoftstore.com/store/msusa/html/pbPage.Help_Win7_usbdvd_dwnTool

install windows using usb 3.0 drive, I done installs in about 4 min on newer i5/i7 machines because usb3 is that fast, once you install, clone the rest

OEM Windows will not install on another OEM's machines. A Dell disc will check to make sure it's being installed on a Dell machine.

Or to put it in a more amusing way.

One is doing a professional Job that probably entails a Budget of over $20.000

And Oy Vey (not the OP name, the real meaning of it), instead of doing it in a professional way One plays with Bobkes.

I don't know what kind of hardware you're using but if you're wondering about WinXP compatibility mode, I read it's 32-bit (EDIT: Even the 64-bit Win7). If I had 2GB of RAM, I'd use 32-bit Win7, with 4GB or more, I'd go 64-bit Win7.

OEM Windows will not install on another OEM's machines. A Dell disc will check to make sure it's being installed on a Dell machine.

The disk would successfully install windows 7..it just won't be activated until he puts in the HP install key. I've done it many times in the past. At that point he should be able to activate over the internet and not have to resort to phone activation.

It's a bit moot though as rsutoratosu's idea of just downloading the iso and making a flash drive installer is a far better way of doing it, especially with that many pc's.

(edited to add "7" to make the point that with XP, a dell OEM disc would stop it's installation from happening, this is no longer the case with Win7)

No, it will not, at least up through Windows 7. I've used Dell's Win 7 discs for Toshibas and Acers, with needing to activate by phone being the only issue.

It will not automatically activate, but it will install just fine.

I used my 7 Home Premium disk (Dell) on my friends Gateway and it activated just fine.

Keep in mind the OEM Windows discs even though they may work fine, do not come with all the same drivers and 'stuff' a retail disc usually does. YMMV, but I have used Dell OEM discs and they lacked full driver options.

If you have legit license keys, just download the proper retail iso's like mentioned above. The 'software' is free, it's the license you are paying for.
