as far as taste. no... it does not taste good at all. and i love jagermeister even. most absinthe i've had is EXTREMELY bitter. bitter enough it makes your mouth want to stop working and just spit it out. it's extremely weird.

in general though... most absinthe brews i've seen just get you drunk more than anything. they have an extremely high alcohol content which tends to override whatever subtle hallucinogenic properties wormwood/thujone may or may not have.

also... if you want to get an idea of what it tastes like, look for Pernod. it's basically an absinthe brew without the wormwood in it.

edit:also... if you are looking to trip... don't think of thujone/wormwood as a good way to go about it. i've read reports of kids trying to drink wormwood extract before... with horrid results. kidney failure is something everyone can do without.

If you wanna good trip, just get some shrooms, dont bother with this crap, its for kids who are afraid to eat a few mushrooms...

IIRC - it's illegal to sell in the US, but not illegal to own, right?

Only illegal if brewed from Wormwood, which is what gives it the hallucinagenic(sp?) effect due to it being poisonness to humans. There are some places to buy wormwood free absinthe in the USA. I know one of the liquor stores at Purdue University in Indiana had it 3 years ago or so.
OK, people never know what they're talking about here. There are types of wormwood that do contain little or no "thujone" which is the toxic ingredient that's banned in the US. These don't make it "bad," but without the "Northern" wormwood - the original ingredient - you might as well just drink Jaegermeister (sp?).

It's much like cuban cigars in that it's not illegal to have it here. However, unlike Cuban cigars, it's illegal to sell them. If you can somehow legally get a Cuban cigar into the states (there are ways), then you can legally sell them. However, absinthe is illegal to sell. The reason, I would presume, is that Cubans won't kill you, at least not quickly. Actually, if you drink a quality absinthe, there shouldn't be much thujone in it anyway, and you'd much sooner die from alcohol poisoning than you would from the thujone (mind you, absinthe comes in varieties that can be as potent as 110 proof).

As for the taste, it depends. If you drink it straight from the bottle, it tastes like black licorice, but you CAN NOT get the taste out of your mouth for the life of you. If you drink it correctly, you put one or two parts absinthe in a glass, then put a cube of sugar on an absinthe spoon and pour 5 parts cool water over the sugar (the sugar would presumably dissolve in the process). This process makes the taste (obviously) much more mild and managable. I will never again attempt to drink absinthe straight as it is the most horrific thing I've tasted in my short life. And the worst part is that it didn't go away for HOURS.

Actually, the composition of thujone isn't that much different from that of THC (if you're a pot-head, you know that THC is the active ingredient in weed).

Yeah, so what does that have to do with anything? If the thujone in absinthe resembles the chemical composition of THC, why would it exhibit the characteristics of a "trip" in the first place? Ive tried absinthe and it didnt do anything, my friend got it in amsterdam...cant really tell you what kind of absinthe it was though.

I had it at the highly raved Thomas Keller restaurant in Vegas (in The Venetian). It's really strong. I didn't like it too much....but I generally don't like strong drinks to begin with.

It has to be processed a certain way so that the drinker won't have ill effects.

The absynthe of yore, which is processed very differently, can't be imported btw. At least that's what the waiter educated us on....

Even the real stuff you get in places like Czech don't really do much other than get you drunk. I work with a girl from Prague and she goes home every now and then so she always brings back a few bottles, plus we have some business trips there so I always have a couple bottles laying around. The Czech moonshine the girl's grandfather makes is a nastier concoction that always has us doing stupid stuff at the end of the night though.

Fun party drink though especially if you light the sugar cube on fire, after you've had a couple beers so the taste doesn't hit you as badly.

composition != effect on body however.

Man what a name for one that I think only knows about this stuff from hearing about it.

Absinthe is over 70% alcohol just by it's construction...it's going to make you drunk

The woodwood/thujone is the dream maker. However, most modern abinsthe's lack that ....

personally a beer and a blunt gets you there faster if that's your piece of the pie.

Absinthe is an alcoholic beverage distilled from a mixture of herbs, including the infamous essential ingedient: wormwood. Wormwood contains a chemical called thujone. It is widely believed in the United States (erroneously) that thujone is a hallucinogen. And it is largely for this reason that absinthe is illegal in the United States.

But many vermouths sold in the states are also made with wormwood and contain more thujone than many absinthes.

It is pretty well known now (outside the U.S. anyway) that the hallucinogenic stories surrounding absinthe have their origin in the level of impurities in absinthe made in the 19th Century, resulting from poor distillation and preservation practices.
