Absolute BEST dual format burner out there?

After having my Philips +RW 208 drive for a couple of years now, I've never really had the need to burn a DVD. Why buy a DVD burner back when they were $500 you ask? Well, let's just say I got it at a great deal, and leave it at that.

Just recently, I've gotten into learning how to make my own DVDs, and have been testing using the DVD+RW disc that came with the drive. Everything has been working great, and I've learned a lot. Well, just a few minutes ago, I checked out the comments on dvdrhelp.com for my drive. To my complete f*cking surprise, this damn drive ONLY burns to +RW media, NOT +R. WTF!?!?!?! I already knew it was a + only drive, but seeing as to how I now cannot use my stack of +R media I've bought, I'm kinda pissed (not rightly so, however, I didn't buy the drive in the first place).

So now, here I am, wanting to burn a +R, but with no drive to do so. My thought is, if I can order a drive from NewEgg tonight or tomorrow, I'll have it by the end of the week. Also, I don't want to buy a cheap drive that will give me coasters. I want a great brand with a great track record, a drive that's been out for a while and has an excellent track record. Unfortunately, I know nothing about DVD burners.

I WANT a drive that will burn -R/-RW/+R/+RW. I WANT a drive that is reliable and consistent. Please show me a drive that fits what I want. Price range is anywhere in the $125 range. Higher, lower, doesn't matter. Please show me some good drives.

I reccomend the NEC2500A

It is great with media, it even burns 6x on a crappy 1x media in the hot deals.

I think the only one that may be better is plextor.

U might want to wait for dual layer burners tho.

I would personally go with the Pioneer 107. Burns 8X to both + and -, and Pioneer is a very solid brand name in my books. I have read that they have a very broad media compatibility list, which makes sense seeing as Pioneer helped "pioneer" the DVD-R format. If you have money to burn go with plextor, I think they may even have a 12X burner out...good luck finding media that will burn at that speed tho.

I have the Sony DRU-510a and love it. The single best purchase I made last year for my PC.

Here are two sites to check for reviews:
cdrinfo.com
cdrlabs.com

. I've become partial to MSI drives lately and their DVD burners have gotten good reviews. And a Toshiba just got a good review.
. Sonys of late have just been rebadged LiteOns.

After reading the stellar user reviews on newegg and other links given in this thread, I went ahead with the NEC 2500A. I've heard practically nothing bad about this drive. Given what I've read, Kristopher, I'm guessing one of the reasons you didn't recommend the NEC is because of the lower CD burning speeds?

Anyhow, I needed a new drive before the week was out in order to meet a personal deadline for a DVD I've been working on. Hopefully you don't prove my choice wrong when you roundup does go live .

The only problem I had with the NEC drive was its inability to work with iTunes, that made me return it and get Plextor.

I did read this in a number of the reviews on newegg, and seeing as to how I don't even have iTunes installed, this hopefully shouldn't be a problem for me.

I could see how that wouldn't be a problem for you, enjoy the burner!
