I encourage you to put on a headset and give this a genuine listen. It's so touching in the end. She utterly destroys the audience.

Gets me every time a bit by the end.

If there's one song I'd like to share, it's this. Let me know your thoughts.

This is a real K-pop, talent from start to end.

Stefani Germanotta (aka Lady Gaga) absolutely crushing it circa 2004.

I didn't care for Lady Gaga - she's like an average voice to fill euro-pop/dancey hits.

Thanks for showing me that she's genuinely talented, not just manufactured by a record label with a DJ.

Agreed. Lady Gaga, like most american pop, is there to make money. Stefani Germanotta however can really let it rip.

And I just want to add that I think she's pretty ugly. That's not just me right? Don't people agree that she's okay looking at best? (face, her body proportions are bit weird too)

Eh, she has a big nose, but she just looks like a normal damn person to me, which is appreciated in the age of manufactured 'artists'. I'd rather just have normies that can act/sing/play instruments.

I give your pop singers and raise one Luther Vandross acapella. No mixing pure voice. Slip ahead to 5:00

And double down Luther embarrassing a stage full of pop singers. Listen to crowd reaction

She has a nice voice for sure Zeze.

I'll share a couple duets of two of my favorites, Anneke Van Giersbergen from the Netherlands (from numerous bands, The Gathering being what put her on the map) & Danny Cavanagh (Best known from Anathema) from the UK

Both songs here are from Anathema, and, honestly, Anathema's vocalist Lee Douglas is fantastic as well, but, Anneke has been my favorite female vocalist since the 90s.

@Zeze, Ailee is American. I believe she grew up in New Jersey. She has beautiful voice but she's no match for true Korean legend singer, Kim Kwang Seok. His story is really sad and this song by him always tears me up. He was a true talent who was murdered by the Korean government.

I know Ailee is American but she's K-pop because she's active there, sings in Korean, and planting her career in Korea. By that logic, I wonder if a white person grew up in Korea, sings in Korean, and plants his/her career in Korea, is he still American Pop?

I thought I knew Korean music scene of early 80s/90s (which wasn't really K-pop back then, more for older folks). This guy is fascinating.

Ailee's performance was emotional, but this guy's sorrow seems deeply seeded. What an amazing performance. I'll ask my folks if they knew KKS.

I read the Korean wiki entry of this guy. It doesn't say aynything about the Korean government murdering him. What's the motive? I don't see anything about him being political.

The english wiki of KKS has a source that says "Police concluded it was suicide but speculation abounded that his wife Seo Hae-soon murdered him."

So wife or govt? What made you say govt?

She's got a Roman thing going on, for sure. Not ugly, IMO, just takes some getting use to.

I learned about Kim Kwang Seok from my wife. She's big fan of his music. I had no idea who he was or his songs before I met her. She's the one who told me his story and that he was murdered. She thinks it was the Korean government because his songs at the time were at the heart of rising Korean student protests and demonstrations. But from reading online it seems lot of people think his wife murdered him for his money which is just as sad. Regardless, not too many people seem to believe he died of suicide like the official police report.

I don't understand lot of his lyrics or words but his voice touches my soul. His songs have so much sadness that I can't listen too much in one sitting or else it affects my mood. There's genuine beauty and sorrow in his songs and voice which seems to reflect the struggles of the ordinary Korean people. Lot of people in Korea now know about him since they did Immortal Song and Hidden Singer episodes on his music and Roy Kim and Jung Jung Young sang Becoming Dust which was one of favorite song of Kwang Seok.

Here's one of Kwang Seok album. The first song is something every male in South Korea who served in the mandatory military service knows. Listen to song 1 and song 7 and tell me it doesn't bring tears to your eyes.

A Letter From a Private. Because of the mandatory military service requirement for all males in South Korea, this song really hits home. This is the military song. I wish he was still alive so I could hear him in live in concert.

I have a present for ya.

Since you like him so much I'll translate that Too Painful song more accurately, conveying nuances of word choices. This song is of few words on purpose. There are many words to say the same thing in any language, each carrying different and significant nuaces. He chose these words very carefully, making sure they convey his intent sufficiently. Actually, after actually translating, the subtitles in the video are flat out wrong and garbage. Here. These actually make sense and tells a story.

The Love That Was Too Painful Was Not Love (much better fitting translation. 'The' usage accurately captures that it's about HIS love, not a general statement)

[EDIT - WAIT. Korean language can omit subject pronoun (I, he, she) in a sentence, so it can be flexibly interpreted both ways- personal statement ("the") or general ("a"). English can't do this!]

By Gim Gwang Suhk

After I sent you away, far away

(an indirect way of saying 'breaking up' in Korean, but obviously he chose 'sent' so one can also interpret it literally)
Just like how the little autumn birds part ways
(referring to how birds unceremoniously disappear when winter arrives)
After I did send you away
As I came back and sat down in front of a drink
(literally a drinking glass- a shot glass, or a mug, etc)
Tears came out

After I sent you away, completely
As I looked at the setting starlights
All the unspoken words were flowing down
(obviously saying he's crying out the unspoken words. I mean crying as in shedding tears, not yelling)
This painful love, can it be erased ('Would I ever erase them' is good too, but then the nominative singular pronoun 'I' is clearly not used when the subtitle did)

As even an any-day rain is a fondest memory (utterly wrong subtitle)
At a scattering street,
as I became a desolate man and hung my head,
(hung my head down in shame/sadness, not suicide)
I heard your voice.

(Basically saying "I heard your voice when I became a lonely/desolate man and looked down.

The Love That Was Too Painful
Was Not Love

One day, the shoulders became wet by wind
(English doesn't have a verb for 'wet'. Dampen/Moistens/Soaks all don't work because they carry the wetness severity. So his shoulders became wet with wind. There's no water. He's describing a state of wind seeping/saturating his shoulders similar to how water gets something wet)
Skirted past by
When my exhausted hours were hung on the window
I begun to resent you
(the 'you' used in this song is a cordial form of you, indicating a certain level of courtesy)

The Love That Was Too Painful
Was Not Love

From now on, let us, as people,
never come to this world as lovers
May bury such words as 'I miss it'.
The unfinished heart

The Love That Was Too Painful
Was Not Love x2

Man the third and fourth verses were tricky as hell to translate. It written in a very specific subtle Korean way that defies the direct English sentence structure. The words are deliberately few, and deliberately specific choice of verb paradigms and honorifics really sets the mood of the man making a declaration (deeply sorrowful yet respectful, also somber & disillusioned.)

Split window this shizz and listen/watch again. Enjoy!!

@Zeze, I appreciate the translation. I found couple different translations online. But I understand the main idea. My wife and her brother told me his songs have lot more meaning if you really understand his lyrics. But I think his music is universal and his songs can still be enjoyed without understanding a single word. Because he sings from his heart and you can hear in his voice. I can't listen to his songs without tearing up. But after I listen to it and cry my eyes out, I feel better. Almost refreshed. If you're fan of Ailee, she did a cover of his The Love That Was Too Painful Was Not Love on TV program Immortal Song 2. I enjoyed her version but it can't compare to the original. But I'm biased. The best song cover of Kwang Seok I've heard was by Roy Kim and Jung Jung Young when they sang Becoming Dust. If you haven't heard Kwang Seok or Roy Kim and Jung Jung Young versions, I recommend you check both out on Youtube. Becoming Dust wasn't Kwang Seok's song but he sang it at his concerts because he loved the song.

Turning 30 is another beautiful song that resonates with me now that I'm older.
