We never hear about stuff like this, but how often does it happen? Has it been happening more recently? I think so. This is outrageous.

When Tennessee law enforcement officials showed up at the home of Lester Siler, a convicted drug dealer out on probation, they asked his wife and 8 year-old son to leave. They didn't know that Lester's wife had turned on a tape recorder in the kitchen. When Lester exercised his constitutional right not to sign a consent to search his house, these officers spent the next two hours torturing him. They beat him with bats and guns, held loaded guns to his head, threatened to shoot him, dunked his head in the toilet, burned him with lighters, attached his testicles to a battery charger, threatened to cut off his fingers, and threatened to "go git" his wife. Then they arrested him for "evading arrest." It wasn't until his wife showed up at the FBI with the tape recording that all hell broke loose. And go figure, even though these officers have been convicted in federal court, not ONE national media outlet gave this story the coverage it deserved. But that's okay. At the time, reporters were busy decrying the immorality of Janet Jackson's Superbowl exposure! These are the same "journalists" who refused to cover the United States Government's secretive medical marijuana program. I'm warning you now, this is the most disturbing recording I've ever heard in my life. But EVERYONE needs to know about this. Our war on drugs is a complete failure, and the national media is following a code of silence on related humans rights abuses.

The link to the news report is broken but a little digging later...

I found this:

Four former Campbell deputies sentenced to prison for suspect abuse

Four former Campbell County Sheriff's Deputies were sentenced to prison Wednesday.

Five deputies pleaded guilty to conspiracy in the abuse of Lester Siler in June of 2004. The deputies went to Siler's Campbell County home because they suspected drug activity.

Their assault of the suspect led to their firings and charges against them. They were accused of violating Siler's constitutional rights.

Siler's wife secretly taped the deputies while they were in the Siler home.

In one excerpt of the tape, Deputy David Webber is heard saying to Siler:

"Let me tell you something. We're gonna know everybody that's supplying you. We're gonna know everything about your business today. And you're gonna take us and where you got your money, we're gonna take every dime you have today, and if we don't walk out of here with every piece of dope you got and every dime you got your (expletive) (expletive) is not going to make it to jail. And if you think we're joking, we're not."

Before sentencing on Wednesday, the deputies' attorneys painted a very different picture of the men facing the judge.

"Sammy has a history of good deeds, not only in the community but nationally. He served in the military for years, he served on the Campbell County Sheriff's Department for 17 years. He truly has never had a single complaint filed against him," said former Deputy Samuel Franklin's attorney, Andrew Roskind.

Friends and family accompanied the men to the Howard Baker Federal Courthouse for their sentencing, and the deputies had hundreds of letters of support from family, friends and community members.

The judge took this all into consideration, but
David Webber was sentenced to 57 months in jail; Samuel Franklin and Shayne Green received sentences of four and a-half years each, while William Carroll will spend four years and three months behind bars.

That is too much time, according to family members.

"I can't describe it, it seems unfair, he did wrong, but it just don't seem right," said Shayne Green's brother, Gary Green.

But Lester Siler's family says they are satisfied.

"Mr. Siler and his family respect the judgment that was handed down by the court today, and they look forward to moving on with their lives," said Siler's attorney, Kristie Anderson.

On Tuesday, another of the five deputies, Joshua Monday, received a sentence of six years.

And if the victim's wife hadn't started that tape recorder, they'd all have walked. They even run down the scenario they planned to recount about how he got to be so beat up on the tape as a way of threatening him. He's a slimeball, for sure, but even slimeballs have rights.

OP> umm, ok, im curious... by "abu Ghrahib style torture", are you comparing the sexual abuse and humiliation events that took place recently in Iraq, with those of the Tennesee cops physically beating a man to near-death? Or are you referring to the "Abu Graib style torture" that took place all during Saddam's reign of power where tens of thousands were beaten to death or worse?

The latter comparison makes more sense.. so I take it that is what you meant?

just wondering...

I'm shocked the patriot act does not outlaw recordings of police. Suppose that will be the next change they make to it.

What a typical whitewash. Absolutely no mention of the beatings and deaths at Abu Ghraib.
Expected from an employee of the US military though.

Maybe Manadel al-Jamadi was faking it just to make the US look bad. You know those crazy Iraqis.

Has nothing to do with helping to catch criminals/terrorists better...so I'm not suprised at all.

People in Abu Grahib drink tea and have cookies all day, same as in Cuba. Didn't you know?

I know . . . this Siler guy actually had rights . . . people in Abu Ghrahib not only didn't get a day in court . . . some didn't even get out alive.

You guys really need an explanation as to why a couple idiot cops in Nebraska beating up a drug dealer is not related to some soldiers hurting and humiliating detainees in mesopotamia?

It's only related if you want to make yet another big, pointless deal about something because you love to whine, bitc.h and moan...wahhhhhhhh oh t he world is collapsing... wahhhh poor us

The rest of the Patriot act has nothing to do with helping to catch terrorists either.

The law of diminishing returns is in full force here. If taking away my privacy will help them catch even one terrorist, I'd be surprised. But honestly, I'd rather roll the dice. If I die, at least I'll die free.

I didn't leave Russia, where law enforcement has unlimited power, and where corruption of all law enforcement and government officials is the rule, just to have the same thing instituted in the one country that seemed to be resistant to such a turn of events.

drug dealers are scum that have taken many lives, that is a given. If a police beats up these scums, I don't really care. They are doing many victims a favor. But if the drug dealer did get beat up by the police, we, the tax payer, probably have to pay millions and millions to the drug dealer. Thats BS.

Drug Dealer scum take the lives of the same people on there level, so with your logic that would be ok, since the scum is getting what they deserve.

There are always some police that are willing to break the law. The real payback is when the perf sues for damages and wins a big lawsuit. You have to know that this is where this is heading.

Guilty until proven innocent! How do we know he was still a drug dealer? Why, because he turned me into a newt!
