Does anyone have the AC Silencer 5 rev 2 for the NV 6800? How significant are the changes vs the rev 1?

According to their web site the rev 2 offers:
Link

**Easier Installation
New clip and back plate design for better fit.
**Exhanced Compatibility
New fan casing design to enhance compatibility.
**Clicking Noise Solution
A filter is integrated into the PCB to reduce the noise generated from the motor.

Has anyone had a problem with clicking noise on the Silencer 5? What is the problem they are fixing? Also any information on the new clip design - Ive seen some mention of installation difficulties, does the new clip improve this?

I just recieved my Silencer 5 but it is the older rev 1 version. I am wondering whether I should RMA before opening to get the new version.

Thanks for any info

I'm waiting for one of these, too, as my XFX 6800GT PCI-E fan sounds like a siren. When I turn on my PC and it goes to max, then settles down, then briefly goes to max when entering windows again - my roommate thought there was a firetruck outside.

But I don't think anyone has rev2 in stock yet.

I think he is talking about THIS.

Yes, I was referring to the NV Silencer 5. (orig link incorrectly pointed to the ATI NV5). Apparently the ATI Silencer 5 also has a rev 2 fixing the same issues. Anybody notice the noise generated by the motor which they are referring to (on either the ATI or the NV versions)?

Does anyone know where I can get one? Everywhere I check online, the AC Silencer 5 rev. 2 is sold out.

www.aerocooler.com has them for $30. I personally went for the Zalman VF700Cu, so I could change the chipset cooler on my A8N-SLI too. Slapped them both on (got the zalman passive for the NB) today and they're working like a charm. Got my card up to 441/1.15 at 54 degrees idle, 60c under load.

Edit: either my browser or the forum isn't letting me link, so here's the URL, just C&P:

Thanks a lot for the link and for the suggestion to get the Zalman. I've never knew of that cooler, but after doing some research it seem it performs better than the NV Silencer. I'm ordering it now. Thanks again.

some of the Zalman warnings concern me about using this on an SLI setup. Any experience with either of these on 2 close together cards?

That answered my main question.

Well, I checked aerocooler.com's resellerratings and looked good so I ordered and my order already shipped. w00t

I didn't want tht big Zalman because I wanted no heat dumping into my case. The HSF on my BFG 6800 ultra OC is driving me nuts because it's venting right on my 4 hard drives and heating them up!! The Artic Cooler should keep my card stock enough to keep the warranty (not interested in overclocking--simply got this for the heat and noise reduction).

I just ordered the NV Silencer 5 Rev. 2 today from SVC for $35 shipped. Should be here in about a week or less... when I get it I'll take pictures so you can see if there are any obvious differences.

*EDIT* Just checked again and SVC does have them in stock still. If you need the coupon code to take $5 off PM me.

Cheval,

Let us know your impressions. Does it appear to make good contact with the RAM and GPU right out of the box? I know with rev. 1, many people had to sand down the HS to get it to make contact. How easy was installation? How much did your temps drop?

Thanks.

I have an ATI Silencer 1 Rev 1 on my 9500 and haven't noticed any clicking noises. The only problem I encountered was the fact that the plastic fan ducting came into contact with a couple PCB components which wouldn't allow it to be mounted. Can't understand how they didn't catch that before production. I had to notch the plastic in two spots to allow proper mounting but other than that it's been working fine.

what kind of additional overclocks are you guys getting with these? And like rileyrr said, were there any contact issues?

I have one of the blue BFG 6800GTs and the stock heatsink is neither quiet nor powerful, but I am still getting a stable 415/1100mhz out of the card. I don't mind the noise and the main reason I am thinking of getting a silencer is for extra overclocks, but these rev 2s are pricier than the rev 1s were so I want to make sure it will be worth it.

Any updates on how well the NV5 Rev.2 makes contact with the memory and GPU? I have a Rev.1 that I am very unhappy with as I cannot get it to make good contact with the RAM, causing me to get memory errors during games even at stock speeds. Does the Rev.2 remedy this? Also, I noticed that the fan housing actually touches the long electric circuitry heatsink at the back end of my BFG 6800GT PCI-E, which I think might be preventing the good RAM contact. Are there any physical differences between the Revision 2 and original revision? If anyone could post pics, I'd be extremely thankful! Stupid Arctic Cooling shows the same pictures for both units.

And I too went for the NV Silencer over the Zalman because I wanted to keep the inside of my case as cool as possible.

Thank you so much Jeff! That's EXACTLY what I needed to see! I see that there are cooling pads on the ram parts, which would solve my contact problem, and I noticed the different mount as well. It's off to eBay with my Revision 1.

Have you had good experiences with the Revision 2?

Well... I haven't had any bad experiences. It's easy to install... I guess the only complaint I have is that those pads that contact the RAM aren't stuck really well... you have to be careful taking the plastic off before installing it or you'll pull the whole pad off.

Case temps dropped a few degrees, CPU load temps dropped a couple degrees. And I guess it's quiet... my computer is relatively loud though I guess so I'm not real sure if some of you would consider it loud or not cause it's drowned out by the rest of my fans.

I like it... it can actually occupy 3 slots because the part with the fan extends down farther. You can see my Audigy 2 ZS in one of those pics... and you can probably see that the Audigy would touch the heatsink if it had to be closer. Luckily I don't use a bunch of PCI cards and have a nice roomy case.

Yeah, I really need the silencer because my case is on the smaller side, with only 120mm intake and exhaust fans, and my DFI board causes the video card to sit very low in the case, practically outside the air channel created by the fans, so without the silencer my card and chipset get really hot.
