I posted this in another thread so sorry for the double post, but I thought it seemed like something everyone here would be interested in reading before buying Vista.

Then, of course if you do want Vista, this IS a nice deal and thanks for posting it.

If you don't view DRM content you won't be affected. If you want to watch HD-DVD or Bluray then you are stuck with DRM and there is nothing you can do about it. Blame the movie industry, not microsoft.
John, don't get all tore up over this.Originally posted by: craftech

I realize that this thread is a deal thread and acknowledged that in my post, but with all due respect that is not what the article said. It is a very long article and I thought it would be worth a read because it has implications far beyond Blu-Ray and HD DVD and politics for all of us interested in computers and entertainment technology. I also didn't intend to take the topic off the deal so I won't post again in this thread.

Was this the Retail version? This is really pissing me off that I can't get a straight answer on this. I don't want to blow $70 to find out I can't do a clean install.Originally posted by: Cardio

I think the advertisement is quite misleading. My interpretation is that:
1. There is no difference between an academic version and a retail version
2. You are purchasing an Upgrade version
3. Unlike previous Windows upgrades, Upgrade version REQUIRES that you have the old operation system INSTALLED on your system. For example, if you are installing a new HDD and upgrading from XP to Vista (upg version), you first need to install XP then upgrade.
I just installed an upgrade to Vista Home Premium and you only have to insert a cd with a previous OS. The previous version does not have to be installed.

Someone just informed me in the OS forum that YOU MUST INSTALL XP FIRST!
It will not allow you to put in a previous version install cd to verify like you could before.
Therefore this is not a good deal.

Will the upgrade version work on a Win XP Pro OEM?

To be fair, this is the best price you'll find on Vista out there (excluding the free Vista Business promo) if you're a student and it's not like this is different from the retail $160 Vista Premium. I think it's worth the savings even if you need to have XP installed first. Besides, I was planning on dual booting Vista and XP anyway.
