the universities give us XP for 10 bucks and now they want us to pay 70 dollars this time for an OS? That use to be one of the perks of being a student. People are trying to rape me for cash anyway they can, Cant they wait until I graduate?

I'm going to have to check my bookstore out next monday. I bought Windows XP (included the most up-to-date XP Pro as well as XP Pro x64) for $5, and Office 2003 Pro for another $5. If Vista is more than $20, then I'll hold off on getting it until it comes down in price.

Anyone know how long these deals will last? I am trying out Vista right now to see if I want to keep it. Also, I installed vista and left the product key blank. I'm guessing the upgrade version will use different keys and require me to reinstall anyway right?

Then, of course if you do want Vista, this IS a nice deal and thanks for posting it.

If you don't view DRM content you won't be affected. If you want to watch HD-DVD or Bluray then you are stuck with DRM and there is nothing you can do about it. Blame the movie industry, not microsoft.

Yup, sorry. I was on the page for Vista Business Upgrade (Shipping Early February) which is $199 and doesn't have any eligibility requirements. I just forgot to change the link, my bad.

Don't know if that is a good deal or not, but I will be waiting for a while no matter what.

I realize that this thread is a deal thread and acknowledged that in my post, but with all due respect that is not what the article said. It is a very long article and I thought it would be worth a read because it has implications far beyond Blu-Ray and HD DVD and politics for all of us interested in computers and entertainment technology. I also didn't intend to take the topic off the deal so I won't post again in this thread.

Regards,

John

after checking with MS they said this about upgrades

you can not install Vista with an upgrade on a new system....NO OS

you will have to fully install XP then in the upgrade menu inside xp you can pick upgrade to vista....

so the old xp install....where is old disk 98 or something and then install is DEAD.
too easy to pirate is their answer.

PS why blame the movie industry for DRM....WTF is microshaft doint implementing it in their OS.... its an os not a goverment connection (OR IS IT ?)

everyone gives business EVERYTHING ....lets see we get creap service, no support and all jobs sent overseas...with tax brakes....what do we get OH YEA...wish I could sit down

John, don't get all tore up over this.
You posted this in the correct place and didn't get far off-field as far as the whole Vista upgrade thing is concerned. Nobody here thinks that disseminating valuable information is even close to a TC.
Besides that, the link to the article that you posted was a real eye-opener for me as well as for a lot of others in these forums.
Not everyone has the time to explore all of these forums and as such, I prefer to restrict my exposure to the ATHD forum. Lots of great information passes through these pages and what you linked to: was great information - no doubt about it.

Its my understanding that if you want to go from XP Pro or MCE 32 bit to any vista 64 bit you can't use an upgrade product. Does anyone know if this upgrade includes 64 bit versions?

Thanks

Someone just informed me in the OS forum that YOU MUST INSTALL XP FIRST!

It will not allow you to put in a previous version install cd to verify like you could before.

Therefore this is not a good deal.

I think the advertisement is quite misleading. My interpretation is that:

1. There is no difference between an academic version and a retail version

2. You are purchasing an Upgrade version

3. Unlike previous Windows upgrades, Upgrade version REQUIRES that you have the old operation system INSTALLED on your system. For example, if you are installing a new HDD and upgrading from XP to Vista (upg version), you first need to install XP then upgrade.

I just installed an upgrade to Vista Home Premium and you only have to insert a cd with a previous OS. The previous version does not have to be installed.
Was this the Retail version? This is really pissing me off that I can't get a straight answer on this. I don't want to blow $70 to find out I can't do a clean install.

To be fair, this is the best price you'll find on Vista out there (excluding the free Vista Business promo) if you're a student and it's not like this is different from the retail $160 Vista Premium. I think it's worth the savings even if you need to have XP installed first. Besides, I was planning on dual booting Vista and XP anyway.

so the belief is that they don't really care if u use the same xp disk to validate many vista installs? and that they won't mind if u still use the xp licence that u've upgraded?

and compusa's vista home premium page sez

Note: This upgrade edition is for users running Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional, Windows XP or Windows Vista only. Backup and clean install may be required.

so u must be able to do a clean install...
