It will be interesting to see if this is actually true. My hunch is that it is not true. I mean, what happens if your motherboard craps out? Are they gonna make you buy a new OS just because you had to replace it? I think not.

From what I've seen so far:

OEM = Locked to motherboard specs once installed. If you want/need to replace your motherboard, it might be possible to go with the same model or one very similiar. Not sure about that, though.

Retail = Can be reinstalled to a different motherboard.

^incorrect, both "can" be used on multiple motherboards (but you are not supposed to b/c of terminology in EULA)

Just for clarification, this academic software is the RETAIL UPGRADE (with NFR / Academic license)
(this version is not full retail, not full OEM, not OEM upgrade)

OEM licenses still different

It bears repeating, however, the the OEM license that comes with Vista is indeed similar to the Windows XP OEM license in that it forbids any kind of transfer. As we have previously reported, users have nevertheless had success transferring those copies of Windows, but they are technically stepping outside of the bounds of the EULA when doing so.

Hot! In for 1

FYI they have a feature where they can match your info to a database that has over half of all students in it, so you don't even need to go through the hassle of sending/uploading verification! I'm at UC Berkeley and it worked for me.

I almost did this until they asked for your SSN for online verification... my school doesn't use SSN for IDs now... they issue you a student ID number... helps reduce identity theft.

That's also my understanding. So, because this is retail, it can be transferred to a different motherboard, but it can only be running on one system at a time.

so, that means if I have Vista RC1 installed ("old" version of an OS heheheeh) I can upgrade to Vista?

Here at UC Berkeley I e-mailed the computer store, they got back and said they will have this same edition for $73... so no dirt cheap academic pricing here

The website lists the following as docs used for eligibility:
------------------------------
Proper documents for Students:

The student's most recent Report Card (K-12)
Current semester/school year Student ID
Registration Receipt for this semester
An official copy of the student's Class Schedule (Hi-ed)
A Letter of Enrollment on school letterhead
------------------------------

Anyone know if just one of these is good enough, or do you need to have all of the above?

At NC State, if you are a CSC student (not sure about who else), you get a membership to MS's Academic Alliance, which gives you access to a whole lot of MS's software (all developers' products, most OS's, some other stuff) for free. Already got a copy of Vista Business from it.

I just bought two. My bookstore at school JUST got Office 2003 so I don't think the will have Vista any time soon. CampusTech's online verification system for students was a breeze as well! No need to fax in any IDs. Great deal, thanks!

Unfortunately, Office is not available through our subscription. Though our bookstore says they will have Office 2007 soon with the Pro version going for $75 and the Ultimate edition for $90. How could your bookstore just have gotten Office 2003? Are you attending Northeast Saskatchewan Community College?

Nope, I'm attending a sub branch of Purdue University. Why it took so long to get office 2003 is beyond me...

[edit] sorry thought the price was only 100, not 200. so only $130 more!

The business version may not be an "upgrade" over the home premium version - unlike the case of XP Home vs. XP Pro. It depends on what functionality you want. The business version is missing the media center functionality and replaces it with advanced backup functionality and remote desktop. If you're interested in the media center functionality, you need to look at either "Home Premium" or "Ultimate".

Here's a chart explaining what each version has and doesn't have:

This seems like a great deal for Windows Vista Premium if your a student. It looks like you have to give them a copy of your school ID card, so you really do have to be a student or school staff. I haven't ordered yet, but does anyone see anything wrong?

I've had this on order from another site, and I've sent them my student id but they won't accept it. Something about not having a date on it or something. The site (academicsuperstore) says that HS students can get it as well.

BTW, Vista supports upgrades only from 2000 and beyond.

Major Question: For thus of us running the Vista beta, will we be able to upgrade to this? If not, then how about Ultimate? Since technically, the Vista beta is the Ultimate version.

most schools will have Windows Vista for student available soon like in april or something. So, if your school already gives u XP upgrade licenses for like 20 bucks or so, u might be lucky to get one for vista soon.

My school stopped doing that at the same time they dropped their Dell campus store. Now they just push Macs, and all the computer labs run HPs.
