1. Boot with the Windows Vista Upgrade DVD.

2. Click "Install Now."

3. Do not enter a Product Key When prompted.

4. When prompted, select the Vista product edition that you do have.

6. Install Vista normally.

7. Once the install is complete, restart the DVD-based Setup from within Windows Vista. Perform an in-place upgrade.

8. Enter your Product Key when prompted.

If that's all there is to it, it sounds pretty simple. Basically, you just install Vista twice, once by booting from the DVD, using no key, then when that's done, you do it once more from within Vista, loading it over itself, entering the key this time. Odd that they set it up so that it'll install without having any key code at all entered during that first runthrough. Haven't recent Windows versions all crapped out their installation if you didn't enter a key? That "3. Do not enter a Product Key When prompted" must be the semi-secret kink this time around. There have always been ways to do clean installs with Upgrade Versions, Microsoft just likes to take advantage of the uninformed, and they scare 'em into thinking that they need to step up & (over)pay for the "Fool" Version....

I don't see anything in those steps that even requires you to put in a Win2k/XP CD. It just seems too good to be true. Anyone able to verify?

Does indeed seem too good to be true. I can't verify this but I've read on other forums that the upgrade discs WILL NOT BOOT, thus rendering this workaround useless. I'll certainly try this when my disk comes in and will post the results.

that's what I figured too, the UPGRADE DVDs won't even be bootable. Would make perfect sense to me.

OK, I have XP Pro installed. So when I do the install like they stated, do I enter the VISTA CD key at step 8?

Thanks.

No difference except for the qualifications needed to buy the academic one.

Not in my past experience with academic software.

That wouldn't make any sense at all.

I just tested my upgrade DVD and it IS bootable.

Mine has shipped. Try their "Live Help", maybe they could tell you.

Did you order the academic home premium upgrade? Mine still just says approved .

Yes- I ordered mine on the 29th. It wasn't until today that it said it shipped. I didn't receive any kind of e-mail shipping conformation, though.

I ordered on the 24th and mine hasn't shipped yet. I called CampusTech on Monday to cancel the order when I thought you couldn't do a clean install with the upgrade -- they said it couldn't be canceled because it had already shipped. Pretty obvious to me now that they were jerking me around. I actually don't want to cancel anymore but its still frustrating

If you want to do a clean install with an upgrade cd on an existing computer you don't have to go through all the trouble...

Read the MS KB 930985

Note the 2nd line of Method 1
Method 1
Start the installation from a compliant version of Windows, such as Windows Vista, Microsoft Windows XP, or Microsoft Windows 2000.
After you have started the installation, you can select Custom at the installation choice screen to perform a clean installation.

I just received my academic home prem. upgrade from Campus tech. So they are shipping, even though their order tracking just says approved.

Another academic store, same product, same price, that allows K-12 to be eligible. My friend has used them before they seem very good on as a retailer.

Edit: I see ProsperoLT has beat me to it. =/
