did anyone find that doing an associates (2 yrs/generals), then transfering to a University to a 4 year program...

that they had to repeat some courses over again?

'cuz I'm thinking that if I have to do 2yrs+4yrs, it doesn't sound appealing. But then 2yrs+2yrs doesn't sound bad for a typical BA.

full time, or +12 cr.

but I'm going to fight this school system so I don't take stupid (unecessary) electives, and just go for the required generals + core majors for the final completion of BA.

how did you tranferees journey?

-thx

If this is your plan, ask the university you want to attend after you get the Associate's degree what classes they take from your school and how they handle transfers.

i did 2 years for associate/transferred to CSUN and i'm looking at about a total of 3 years at CSUN due to some classes not transfering well. If i had taken more units though i'd probably be looking at closer to 2.5 years. Also I was planning on transfering to a UC, but that didn't work out. The worst part was that I ended up having to take the full year of introductory bio again, and my ochem didn't count

Why would you have to fight to not take electives?

because you're required to take general ed classes in specific regions such as history/science/social studies/government/art/phys ed. both lower div and upper div. I find the elective classes to be more interesting than the core classes, since most of the time the teachers seem to be more interesting, personally.

It all depends. I don't think you are getting out of electives if you don't have equivalents to transfer in since the other students had to take those same classes to earn their degree.

If the two schools had some kind of program to take 2 years at the CC and then transfer to the University, those classes will generally count. However, if you just took CC classes and now want to transfer them into some University, you are going to end up repeating things. I took an accounting class at the CC one summer because online it said it would transfer over to my uni. Apparently it was outdated online, so I had to retake the class at my uni, though I only ever showed up for the tests because it was the same material I learned before (and because they kicked me out for sleeping, lol).

Just enroll at a real university and take the classes you have to take but don't want to take at the local CC.

In Virginia we have a great transfer system. Every single class I've taken transfers to my four year school, just had to follow their course advising guidelines from the start of my academic enrollment and I am guaranteed credit for those at the four year school as they worked with the two year school to make the list.

Make sure your credits will transfer to the university of your choice.

I'd say to get the gen-ed classes out of the way at a local community college. You pay much less money on classes that aren't likely to affect employability in the future, but you'll still gain exposure to the information which is required for a regular 4-year degree.

I went to community college, and then to Penn State; all of my credits transferred, but only about 21 counted for my major, since I switched majors. (MIS to Mechanical Engineering Technology)

Are you planning on getting your AA, working for a few years, then going back for your BA?

Well, I finished all of the university's core curriculum classes at a community college. When I arrived at the university, I only had to deal with math and science classes. Everything transferred just fine.

I went to a junior college and got my AA, now going back to school at a University states away from my JC. I literally had to send email back and for like, 20 times to the admissions person so they would accept some of my credits, or else it would have put me back an entire year. I'm doing online courses for a year (12 credits each semester), and then taking two summer school next summer, 6 classes each fall and spring, then as much as I can during summer of 2011--so I'll finish in 2 years.

I couldn't go to a school in California (where I live), though--they wouldn't accept some 75% of my credits. It's all a business to these people now /throws hands in air.

Yes it happens a lot due to prerequisites and the fact that most classes will not transfer
Probably better for you to transfer after one year if you can pull it off.

Like Virginia, NJ has a great system for getting credits approved in-state. In fact, my older daughter got her associate's at community college and went on to Montclair State. Since she had the associates degree rather than just transferring, there were several courses she didn't have to take. Nice.

Much more complicated if you're not staying in state, or if some time has passed.

Best of luck to the OP.
