access from outside network

Hello, I have a camera set up in my house for home security.I can access these cameras on an app on my phones and view and make changes on my camera from my phone. My question is how this works exactly?
My thoughts are, my phone connects to the internet and connects to my public IP and then my router uses NAT table to access my camera( which has its own IP). Phone app---->web--->public IP----->router--->Local IP/Nat table?
Is this correct way of thinking?

Is there other software involved? If you can access it ouside your local network, it came with software that opens a port on the router so that your router can access it from outside your local lan, or the app logs you into their site and all the camera data feeds through (less likely). Since we don't know what you have, hard to say for sure.

sorry it is a D-link and yes i had to download software on my computer

I believe the D-link cameras use UPnP which dynamically forwards ports. Some systems will use NAT traversal or STUN servers to facilitate the connection.
