reposting my post of 7 months ago (Archived post of 6/23/03 ).
Deals appear to still be valid!

Saw another thread and decided this hot deal deserves a thread of its own for kudos / rants.

Access4Less.net
access numbers search form

Special $4.95/month link (w/$8 setup) - Sometimes active, sometimes not!
(otherwise $5.95/month)
NO SETUP FEE LINK : Special no setup fee link -- MANY THANKS to galawdawg - stolen from later post
(otherwise $8 one time setup fee if you don't use the above "freedom list" link!)

Unlimited standard "56Kb" dialup
NO special software to download or install
NO ADS !!! NO BANNER!!! NO CONNECT ADS!!! NO (extra) POPUPS!!!
V.92 (Modem-On-Hold - take / make short call and maintain connection?)
Account history (dialup session info - when, how long, how much data, ...)

Beats Juno / NetZero / United $9.95/month hands down !
Can't even imagine what people think they get for $23?/month that makes AOL worthwhile!

lol you can probably keep nagging aol for like 6 free months then cancel and sign up again or something if you were so inclined.

On a slightly related note, aol for broadband actually seems to provide some neat content except it's buggy and it seems that much of the content isn't available at all times(server crashes?). But nonetheless neat content

Limitation of Dial-Up Services
Although Access4Less advertises "Unlimited Access" in regards to some of it's Dial-Up services, there are several limitations applied. The sole purpose of these limitations are intended to limit the amount of unnecessary use of Access4Less services by any such User, which restricts overall Access4Less system availability for other such Users. These limitations apply only to Dial-Up access services offered by Access4Less.

Idle Timeout
User agrees to have their online session automatically terminated after ten (10) minutes of consecutive inactivity. Inactivity is defined as less than 500 bytes of data transferred between User's modem and the Access4Less service.
Maximum Single Session
User agrees to have an online session automatically terminated after five (5) hours of consecutive time, regardless of data transferred during such specific online session.

Minimum Re-Connect Limit
User understands they cannot log back onto the Access4Less system for a time period of one (1) minute following the termination of their previous online session, regardless of the reason for the previous session's termination.
Multiple, Concurrent Online Sessions
User agrees to maintain no more than one (1) concurrent online session for each PPP/ISDN account purchased.

users may not:

attempt to defeat any idle timer or system tool intended to enforce the part-time and personal nature of User's connection, including the use of pingbots and other methods of avoiding timing disconnection

No System Backup
Access4Less does not and will not perform system backups on any User's E-mail account(s). Access4Less shall not be held responsible for any lost E-mail data, email attachments, or any E-mail message contents, regardless of the reasoning for data loss or system causes. Except as otherwise set forth herein, Access4Less will not provide historical data, to any party for any reason, regarding any system or Internet activity.
Access4Less does not and will not perform system backups on any User's personal web site account(s). Access4Less shall not be held responsible for any lost web data, web files, or any web site contents, regardless of the reasoning for data loss or system causes. Except as otherwise set forth herein, Access4Less will not provide historical data, to any party for any reason, regarding any system or Internet activity.

Just an observation from their flspecial.htm page:

"We have instant activation, so you can log on as soon as you sign up. Please make sure you enter valid Credit/Debit Card & Expiration Date.

You can either download our Setup Software by clicking HERE or follow manual instructions available HERE.

All charges are monthly. We charge $5.95 per month and $0 one time setup for FreedomList customers. If you prefer to signup by Telephone please call us at 888-A4L-0533 (888-245-0533) or 770-349-3422
>>>>(Your account will be charged $5.00 per call)

To search for access numbers please click HERE"

$5.00 to call them on a toll-free number when they say they have "free support"??

Confirmed.

I helped a co-worker purchase a Dell Dimension 4600 with 17" CRT courtesy of a Hot Deal.

He was paying $21.95/mo to MSN but hated the cost and all the damn grahphics/spyware crap.

So he signed up for access4less using the no $8 setup fee link and it's perfect. No software to install, uses regular Outlook Express and IE.

Exactly, that's the way to do it. I can't stand those "access" programs. Even broadband providers try to load a crapload of spyware/adware on your machine these days.

This service is the best I have ever used for dialup. Now that I have SBC, I don't need it any more.
Good service.

pretty good service, I always get on, but at times my connection speed is 45.2 instead of 52kbps.
Well worth the price, can't see paying more than $6 for internet every month (used to pay $8 for talent group, until they doubled their price in the name of some acceleration software!)

-Edit- no no,seriously, unless you plan to leave your connection on all the time *which it seems you cant, why would access4less be a better deal then access4 free -
-
seems cool, but have you checked out Access4free seems similar. but its a $5 one time set up fee. and nothing per month if you use less then 10 hours. (i use it for access on my pda through infrared on my cell phone.) after 10 hours they charge you but if i remember it never goes above $10 a month.
Ive had it for about 2 years now, and NEVER seen a charge on my credit card (after the setup $5)

Is this Access4Less a contract type thingie, or is it just month to month with right to cancel at any time without penalty?

I can also confirm the goodness of Access4less.

I have been using it for about 2 months so far. I used the no setup and $5.95/month option. I usually connect at 50k, but if the connection is slower, I simply disconnect and reconnect and typically get the desired 50k.

No complaints thus far, I highly recommend.

Have any of you tried Access4Less Express for $8.95?

Surf 5 Times Faster
No new hardware required
Includes all features of Access4Less
Eliminate all Popup, Pop Under, and banner ads.
Faster downloads & continue downloads after disconnect.
5 Free Email Accounts w/25MB of storage
$8.95 per month
Dial-up speed like never before!

I have DSL but was thinking about setting up an account for my 17yr old Daughter who lives with her Mom.
Do you think a 17yr old with basic computer skills can set it up?

All that does is cache websites on your computer. The software will save the websites you visit enabling you to surf those sites 5 times faster. OR it could be loading links in the background while you read one site. Considering that the $9/mo is still cheaper than most other ISPs, you could give it a shot, but remember... dialup is dialup.

Read some of the reviews on freedomlist.com for Access4Less and it seems like it looks like it is hit or miss. Those that never need to contact customer service love it and those that do hate it.

Will A4L boot you off for exceeding a certain amount of hours or megs in downloads a month?

Also, how is the usenet list? both in number of groups and retention

Many times, I've left it on overnight downloading stuff, and have ALWAYS been booted off by the next morning. But it does go a few hours before stopping, and you can always automatically redial and reconnect. I've never noticed any kind of MB limit, but I've never really tried to find out either. Never really tried newsgroups much.
