I run outlook as my desktop email program. I was wondering how well the outlook app works or is there something else that let's you have same data in outlook synced to your handset. I know the default email app can be set up via imap so you basically have that covered, but I'd also like to see calender functions synced between the 2.

Who is your email service provider or are you talking about Outlook.com? I know with the stock mail client, it will also sync your calendar and contacts with outlook.com. Just trying to clarify between the app and service.

The GMail app can even connect to 365 or Exchange now. There's no need to use them via IMAP.

I'd like to say that the Outlook app takes care of the calendar as well (and can be integrated with whatever calendar app you're using on the Android device), but I can't confirm that as I don't really use my 365 calendar (or even the Outlook app anymore for email, as the GMail app does it just fine).

I'm talking about Outlook 2016.

Well this is something entirely different than we thought before.

If it's your Outlook calendar on your desktop that you wanted to sync with your phone, why not simply sync it to Google calendar and call it a day? Which email client you use is irrelevant.

After a good bit of troubleshooting found how to get it done. Basically you need to use an outlook.com account as the intermediary for calender data storage. Assume if you normally used the outlook.com email as your main email it would also be an easy set up.

After adding the .com account to my desktop program, then set .com inboutlook as data default account, went to outlook.com to set default calendar, and finally installed the outlook app and loaded all the accounts.

I can no add/modify calendar items and have it automatically sync between desktop and app.

Only issue i haven't figured yet is why visual notifications for the app aren't working, only getting vibrate for new mail.

Seem to have hit one small snag in the great transition. The outlook app, in android only, does not have an unread mail indicator...wtf...

I have the same problem with my desktop Outlook.
Is there a way to sync Outlook calendar with my iPhone without using cloud services? If you could show me how to sync data through USB or WiFi network it would be just great.

I use "Nine-exchange on mobile" app. Works great with Office365 or regular exchange mailbox. Outlook calendar automatically integrates to my default calendar app and the layout is very elegant and professional. Not to mention the security is at the application layer, so you're not pestered with PIN code every time you unlock your phone.

I used the Outlook app for a short while and it was a total piece of crap. Set it up on my wife's phone too and she was also complaining about it. That was more than a year ago, so it may have improved. We're both using myMail right now but there are a ton of them out there.

The app you use for email should not affect the setup you have for your calendar. But, I am using the built in Android calendar so YMMV.

Microsoft revamped the Outlook app for Android towards the end of last year. You are correct, it used to be really really bad (and crashed all the time), but the new version is actually praised by some reviewers as one of the best mail clients for Android (especially on tablets). I know, it sounds impossible, but that's how it is.

I personally used it for about a month, and I seriously have nothing bad to say about it. Then I realized that the GMail client also does Exchange/365 adequately and I'd rather not have two mail clients polling my emails (draining my battery, taking up my RAM), so I decided to go full GMail and got rid of Outlook.

The main thing I wanted was something that could easily sync desktop outlook to a calender on the phone. Without buying some additional program or paying for a service this is the best I've managed so far.

Main dislike I've come across is inability to move to next/previous message without going back to the inbox.

I've been trying to solve my sync problem with iPhone for 3 weeks and tried 4 different software: gSyncit, Akruto, Companionlink and Wondershare TunesGo.
gSyncit
Pros:
- Support for Android and iOS
- Price ($19)
Cons:
- Works by pushing data to Google account (doesn't work for me)
- No "offline" mode with Wi-Fi or USB
- Need to install a few apps on your phone to host Outlook notes and tasks

Akruto
Pros:
- Support for Android, iOS and Windows Phone
- Automatic syncing via Wi-Fi or over the Internet without using cloud services
- SSL encryption
- Works with smartphone's native apps
Cons:
- Price ($34.95)

Wondershare TunesGo
Pros:
- Can backup photos, music and SMS
Cons:
- Syncing is not automatic. Each time you want to sync Outlook with iPhone you need to go through this "Export/Import" pain.
- No support for calendar, notes and tasks.
- Price ($39.95)

Companionlink
Pros:
- Works with both Android and iOS devices
- Supports syncing via Wi-Fi, USB, Cloud
- Syncing is automatic
Cons:
- Price ($49.95)
- Requires extra app on your device to host Outlook data

After the first week, I decided to continue with Akruto and Companionlink to see how they work in Wi-Fi mode. The experience was pretty similar except when you need to find something from your Outlook on your mobile device. It's much easier to work with Outlook data from your native phone's apps without switching each time you need 'Outlook" or "non-Outlook" contacts or appointments. While Akruto is cheaper, I'd say it's a better option.
Here's how it works with iPhone:
