So I was moving all my photos over to my computer, and long story short, I accidentally overwrote a bunch of pictures on my iPhone. I went to plug in my phone to restore from backup, but it automatically backed up the phone, so now my previous backup is gone.

I still have the quicktime files that take a small video whenever you take pictures. Is there a way besides using print screen to take the picture from those?

No Apple iCloud backups? (I'm not an Apple user, but I thought all of the pics you take with your phone, are automagically backed up to "the cloud" too. No?)

Bummer.

Yeah, you can use VLC to export a single frame picture of something from a video. Keeping in mind that they'll be at the lower resolution of the video, and not the higher quality of the still photos from the phone.

Depends. You have to sign up for iCloud and enable it.

It's pretty easy to run out of the 5GB space for the free tier, so a lot of people turn it off because they're not interested in paying, and back up to their computers, otherwise known as the "old fashioned" way.* (Or they just disable iCloud backups for music and photos/movies, which take up most of the space.)

*Habits are habit-forming.

OP, do you have Time Machine turned on? If you do, you'd probably be able to pull up an older wired backup.

Thanks for the replies guys.

Dave the Nerd: I was able to pull them out using iMovie. They are not as good as the originals, but at least it is something. I have over 20gb of photos and videos, so the cloud is set to store my music, as it would only put a small dent in the photos. I backed everything up to my computer and my portable drive, so hopefully I won't have this issue again.

TheStu: Unfortunately, I use my work computer for my iPhone backup, and my wife uses the iMac. All of her stuff is backed up in Time Machine, however, mine is not.

Do you have photos on iCloud? You might login iCloud.com and check for that. Otherwise, I'm afraid you have to try some three party software like iFoneTips or FonePaw, which enables to scan data from iTunes/iCloud backups or directly on iPhone. I've retsored some photos via these way a couple days ago.

I have cloud turned off for photos. I take almost all my photos from my phone. Last time I checked, I had around 16gb of photos and videos after I moved a bunch. It isn't even worth using the cloud, cause I don't know which ones it will keep. I was able to get most of the photos back from the video files.

I think so, I also have dropbox - and photos automatically go to dropbox too - I have never accessed my icloud drive, so I would not know for sure. Come to think of it, I don't know how to access my cloud drive? Do I go to itunes too?

icloud may automatically back up the pictures once you login when you get the phone. However, I turned off the photo back up when I got the phone, cause I didn't want my photos on the cloud. It specifically only backs up my contacts, calendars, and notes.

Glad to hear that you have your photos back. Actually, it would be a little hard to recover accidentally deleted iPhone photos without any backup. But I'm kind of confused why don't you sync your photo to Cloud, it would be more convenient, right?

QuickTime Pro (7 at least, not sure about newer) does a movie to Still Image sequence that works beautifully.

It works so well that I use it a lot when I need to capture a specific moment of a fast moving event, I'll take a movie of it (4k mp4) export the region I want as an image seq at highest quality of course, and pick a good still from there. Works beautifully for something there's no way in hell I was capturing in still camera mode anyway.

Not sure whatever quality these video files are, but I'd wager QT Pro can make them into as good still images as is possible.

Side question and possibly relevant: Telling iTunes (on Windows, maybe Mac too) to do a manual iDevice backup won't be overwritten by an auto-sync/backup upon connecting the iDevice, will it?
