I don't think his definition of corruption is the same as ours. Read his comments, he doesn't seem to like democracy very much. Corruption to me means greasing the skids to get things moving. Sure there's lots of that in this country, but in many other countries there is A LOT more just as a matter of course. Something as simple as getting a table in a restaurant, it is implied that you pay the seating host. Here we have a much more "wait your turn," attitude. Other countries, that simply isn't the mindset. You want something done, you gotta pay for it.

Chan has been a big flag waver for the PRC in recent years. According to Transparency International, North Korea and Somalia tied as most corrupt countries. US isn't even middle of the road. That's not so say it doesn't have a problem. But not anywhere near as bad as China, or most of Asia for that matter.

Chan, as a washed up action star, really should keep his mouth shut on things he knows nothing about. You'd think his beloved PRC would have taught him that.

Speaking of corruption, I'm surprised nobody brought up Haiti. Mega earthquake took out 200K people 3 years ago. Billions poured in to rebuild. 3 years later, nothing's done, 700K people still live in refugee type camps. Nothing has changed before or after the mega earthquake. Where did all the relief money go?

I think that Transparency International graphic is pretty close for general placement. It could use some tweaking, but it's in the ballpark.

I think the problem that people are going to have here is identifying corruption since most of you have probably never seen it. Corruption is seen really when there are big dollars involved. The Haiti example is a great one. I think NPR had a show on how all the money was wasted. Someone linked an article about Lance Armstrong taking 45% of his charities money for administration costs. That's corruption.

If you go to Zimbabwe you see the corruption immediately since the cops all have to take bribes to pay their families (they get no salary). However in the states the corruption is at the higher ends of the spectrum. If you're moving large amounts of assets you better believe there is an incredible amount of corruption. If you're conducting large business deals for private companies the corruption is incredible. Otherwise the next guy will make the money and you'll be out of business.

This is true, and if we charted "Total corruption" instead of "per capita corruption" the US would be pretty far up the list due to our massive economy.

But China would almost certainly still have us beat. Their political system runs on patronage to a degree that our congresscritters could only dream of.
