Just yesterday, auditors were at my house to reassess our property tax. They said with the new rates coming up, this year we will have to pay Rs. 90,000 (~$1650) per year in property taxes. They asked for a $250 bribe to fix our rate that so we would only have to pay around $250 annually for the next few years until they reassess. My Mom agreed. For someone with an annual income of just over $12,000 (which puts you in middle-class to the upper-middle-class range) and struggling with cancer (thankfully covered in my employer's insurance and a retirement plan she had invested in), $1650 in just property taxes is fucked up.
The last time the house was assessed was in 2003. My Dad had bribed them to make a similar deal - pay about $100 annually instead of the original $300 or so. Now it's gone up from the $300 to $1650.
That's what the government gets for setting fuck-all tax rates, embezzling all the money and doing nothing for the community. My neighborhood looks like a dozen IEDs blow up in it every night. Dug up everywhere, potholes the size of your head, dirt and trash all over. Believe it or not, most of the homes are worth $250,000 - $500,000. Even some large houses approaching a million. I have seen what neighborhoods with $500,000 homes look like in a First World Country. Even the ghettos there look like paradise compared to this shit.
Fuck this country and its politicians who are the masters of embezzling billions of dollars in taxpayer money while people suffer.
This is why nobody cares about cheating the cheaters in government.
