I've had my best friend killed by a drunk driver. What sucked the most was I was there to witness it. He was a pedestrian too. I know what it feels like and it's something you'll never forget. My thoughts are with Richard's family and friends. RIP.

My condolences... this is terribly sad. I know it sounds trite, but I enjoyed his posts. What a loss...

RIP

I just found this in a member's profile and then saw it was the top thread in "my forums". I went to middle school and high school with Rick. My first memory of him is him is in middle school during lunch. Some jock picked a fight with him and he didn't back down. They just pushed each other around but Rick wasn't going to take sh*t from anyone.
The last time I saw him was at a New Year's party this past January. He just opened his apartment up to everyone. He made sure everyone was comfortable and was having a good time. I crashed there that night and left quietly, early the next morning. I haven't talked to him since.
I was at a lot of LANs with him, spent time in class with him, and have enjoyed watching him grow even after we all went our ways after high school. I'll miss him and know that all his friends will too. Hope to see you all for winter break.

RIP, I read his last thread the other day

although i didn't know him, it's sad to see a good person suffer due to the selfish acts of someone else.

New Details In Deadly Weekend DUI

POSTED: 8:18 am EST October 31, 2006

Centre County -- Police have released new details in a deadly weekend DUI-pedestrian accident in State College.

According to police, 20-year-old Anthony Torsell was driving between 50 and 60 miles per hour with no headlights on along South Atherton Street when he hit two pedestrians, killing one and critically injuring the other. The speed limit there is marked at 35 miles per hour.

Police say Torsell had a green light and the pedestrians were in the crosswalk. Torsell is accused of having a blood-alcohol level three times above the legal limit.

Fatal DUI victim ID'd
By KELLY DEVINE
10/31/2006

STATE COLLEGE - The pedestrian killed by a drunk driver on Saturday near the Pennsylvania State University campus has been officially identified as Richard A. Smith, 21, most recently of the 300 block of East Hector Street in Conshohocken and formerly of Chadds Ford in Chester County.

Smith was not a Penn State student, but was a 2003 graduate of Unionville High School and a 2006 graduate of West Chester University, where he earned his Bachelor of Science degree in computer science, according to his obituary.
He was currently a computer network analyst at IPR International LLC in Conshohocken.
Smith will be laid to rest on Sunday in West Chester.
The Daily Collegian, Penn State's college newspaper, indicated that Smith was in town visiting friends, and that his family was unaware of his visit.
The paper also noted that Smith's friend said his ashes would be spread across the Chesapeake Bay after his cremation.
Centre County deputy coroner Judy Pleskonko confirmed that the cause of death was blunt force trauma to the head.
Pleskonko added Smith was identified by his parents. She said State College Police also identified him by his driver's license.

Life is a valuable thing. Sadly sometimes it takes something like this 'hitting home' to remind us of that fact and how easily that could have been anyone of us.

R.I.P.

I can't believe the driver is out on bail. Why this guy should ever again have the luxury of walking freely down a street is beyond me...

I'm sure that's why many are so affected by this. I know if scares the hell out of me. It's a peer at the same point in life as many of us and he's gone.

Thats freaky. I talked to the guy an aweful lot here on the forums.

I know its already been stated a hundred times but, isnt it disgusting that the drunk driver always lives?
