10-31-2006 Alleged drunk driver 'flying'

Witnesses say man speeding down street
By Pete Bosak
pbosak@centredaily.com

Witnesses told police that the driver, 20-year-old Anthony "Tony" Torsell, was traveling at about 50 to 60 mph southbound on Atherton Street, where the speed limit is 35 mph, when he plowed into the two pedestrians, who were in the crosswalk.

"Definitely," one witness was quoted as telling police when asked if the Torsell was speeding. Two witnesses described Torsell's Buick Skylark as "flying."

Several witnesses said they were stopped for red lights on Beaver Avenue. It remained unclear Monday whether Torsell had a green light. The investigation is continuing.

Police said in a criminal complaint that Torsell admitted to drinking five beers and two shots of whiskey at his State College apartment just before the fatal incident. Torsell also had a fake Kentucky driver's license with his name and picture on it, but with a false birthdate, police said.

Police found a partially eaten McDonald's cheeseburger on the front seat and Torsell admitted he was eating while driving, court documents indicate.

While funeral arrangements were made Monday for 21-year-old Richard A. Smith, of Chadd's Ford, the second pedestrian hit early Saturday morning was fighting for his life at Geisinger Medical Center in Danville.

Aaron C. Stidd, a Penn State student from Huntingdon, remained in critical condition at the hospital's intensive care unit Monday.

Smith was a life Boy Scout and was passionate about computers from a young age.
He earned a bachelor's degree in computer science at West Chester University and was employed as a computer network analyst in Conshohocken.

I've been on an AT sponsored vacation the passed couple of weeks, but I read ATOT, and read this thread the night it was created. I was absolutely shocked that Richard's life was ended so tragically. I wish the very best for his friends and family, and I know that his contribution to AT will be missed here.

figured it was about time i added some memories of my own.

Rick was the first person to share a beer with me on a college campus, First person to share a cigar with me, First person to get me a handle of booze, First person to get me to a LAN, First person to comment on my appearance when I started to lose weight (and the only to say something every time I saw him). He was so giving to those whom he cared about. I cannot remember once where he wasn't the first to offer to cover the check regardless of whether or not he actually had the money. His friends always came first for him. I cannot begin to describe how awesome that is. I'm reminded of a line from Jackson Browne - The Late show

"Maybe people only ask you how you're doing
'cause that's easier than letting on how little they could care
But when you know that you've got a real friend somewhere
Suddenly all the others are so much easier to bear."

Rick was that real friend. He always made time for his friends, was the one searching for things to do, wanted to be together and having fun, would listen and offer advice. Life called and he more so than anyone I know had the gumption to answer it screaming demanding more. All the while still taking the time to reflect, appreciate it (the sunrise thread enough proof?) and listen.

I will miss him so much. I can only hope that I was the same for him as he was for me, but sadly I would probably guess I was not.

i don't know about life imprisonment for this douche... i think 40 years is enough... just so that when he gets out of prison, he'll brooks himself.

I'd take his license away forever. I'd put him on a 40 year probation. Community service for 20 years. But prison doesn't help anyone and will probably make it worse unless you never let the guy out.

So tfw, he needs to be behind bars for the rest of his life. Why should he walk free when Ace cannot?

As I said before Slam the jail ceel door shut and dont look back

I woke up Sunday and checked here and saw his sunrise thread and said "How can it be in honor of him if he made the thread". It wasn't till I saw this that I realized a mod did the edit. For some reason this really makes me sad. Sadder than if someone I knew personally died. I really hope he is in a better place.

I'm sure it was. I'm a little suprised that they had his parents ID him. That must have been just awful.

They claim that Rick (ace) died quickly and painlessly, however, the other victim, Aaron C. Stidd is still in critical condition. I've updated the OP to ask that you keep Aaron, his family, and his friends in your thoughts and prayers as well.

I Id'd my brother so my parents wouldn't have to. They still don't know. My dad was also hit by a drunk driver, but thankfully he was in a large truck, and he won the argument against a sports car doing extra-legal speeds. But he still has problems.

I only knew acemcmac as a forum member not as a real life friend. But that doesn't make the hurt go away. the world lost a great guy. RIP acemcmac.
