Acer 19" LCD $200 AR

Staples this week, April 23-29, has an Acer 19" LCD for $250-$50EZR(Easy Rebate)=$200. There is also a customer appreciation coupon for 12% off, $170(edit: this coupon has expired). I called my local staples and they said yes, it does have digital input. Model as listed in flyer al1916a/622187

Just got back with one. Used the new $30 off $150+ purchase(they have theses out by the counters in most stores, b&w photocopy) and the 12% customer apperciation coupon from staples.com. Walked out the door for $207($157 AR). Mine was an al1916asd(asd = DVI) some stores will just have an al1916a(analog) YMMV.

These are 6bit screens, so they should be decent for games, but will have noticable differing of colors compared to 8bit screens.

Just got back from Staples in Beverly MA. Got the DVI version, and it looks great; 0 dead pixels. Used the 12% customer appreciation and $30 coupon, plus a $3 ink coupon. Total, after tax, came to $200 end pennies, so total will be $150. Sweet deal!

by the way, sideswiped, how do you know that this is 6 bit, not 8? My manual doesn't say.

I got mine. They gave me a $30 off coupon in store. I had the 12% customer appreciation coupon and a $20 coupon that they took. After I mail in the rebate, this will have cost me $138.00. Woot!
No dead pixels either.

Exactly, it doesn't say + it's a budget lcd + 8ms = most likely 6bit panel. the thread over at Fat also seems to agree it's a 6bit panel, good for games but not that great for photoshop use.

Most manufacturers won't print the color bit depth. If they do it will read something like 16.2 million colors(an 8bit display).

This is pffffbin hot. The $20 off printable coupon says it can't be combined with any other coupons in the fine print, I'm guessing the rest of you got lucky with cashiers that didn't bother to read em? I have a feeling if I tried to use both one of em would get denied... Is the $30 of $150 coupon printable as well, or am I SOL if I don't have one on hand?

the $30 coupon is located at the store. they had them on the counter of the store I was at, but I've heard them being placed otherplaces throughout the store. Just ask an employee about them. The 12% off coupon is located online as a printable pdf.

I haven't heard of any problems using both of them. It's just the normal $10, $20,or $30 off coupons that people have had varying luck.

You guys who are now using the new monitor, I am wondering how you configured it for colors. Did you do nothing, just P&P, or have you used some app to configure for the best color? I installed the monitor driver and loaded the ICC in the Windows Color Schemes (or whatever), but I'd still like to improve the colors a bit if possible, and wanted to know if anyone has figured out a good configuration for this particular monitor.

16.7m colors is an 8 bit (256 colors for red, 256 colors for blue, 256 colors for green) display.
256x256x256 = 16,777,216 colors. A 6-bit display uses dithering and can only manage 16.2m colors (with dithering). 6-bit means 64 colors per primary color. 64x64x64 = 262,144. With dithering, it manages to squeeze out 16.2m colors.

The manual from the Acer site for the 8ms AL1916 says it's 16.2m colors.

Just because the specs state 16.7m colors doesn't mean it's 8-bit. A lot of manufacturers will claim their 6-bit panels are 16.7m colors and don't specify that it's via dithering. I wouldn't count on a panel being 8-bit unless the manufacturer specifically uses the term "8-bits".

I was able to use the $30 off and the $20 off but they would let me use the 12%. They said it excludes computer equipment. Then a manager said you could not combine the 20 and 30. She let mine go through but refused the guy behind me.

I was able to use the $30 off but they would not let me stack the 12% on it. Still a good deal but could have been sweeter.

So:
299 - 50 instant rebate = 249 - 30 off coupon = 219 + 13 tax = 232 out the door - 50 easy rebate = $182.00.

I got the $30 and the 12% and a $3 ink cupon off. First store I went to I asked the manager and he said no on both cupons. I went to another store and just gave them the cupons without asking and they took both of them.

I got this terrific deal! Here's how mine broke down:

$249.94 - 12% Discount of $29.99 - $20 off coupon + $16.00 tax (8.00% NY) = $215.95 out the door -$50 easyrebate = $165.95 final price! If only I had the $30 off coupon

It took me two attempts to finally get it with the extra $20 off: I went with a friend to the only Staples around and told him to go to one cashier while I went to another (they were standing next to one another). I gave mine the item, he began to ring it up and then I gave him the 12% coupon. Then he asked me if I wanted to do a Staples Rewards, so to be as friendly as possible I did. After that, I gave him the $20 off coupon as an afterthought, lo and behold, this kid actually reads every word of the fine print and rejects me, even after asking him to "just scan it and see if it works in the computer, because the computer would void it if it wasn't supposed to work." Of course, my friend who went to the cashier I directed him to got everything with no problem whatsoever. So I went back home and asked a housemate to go back with me (with gas so expensive, thankfully it's under 5 minutes away!) and use the cashier my friend used. We did, she got it, and I immediately went back in and returned my costlier purchase with no shame ;-)
