Did they try and 'switch' you to the Acer with an Athlon64 3500+ for ONLY $160 more?

Sh!t for $147 more I can replace that Sempron with an Athlon X2 3800+ from NewEgg!

Got mine thanks to my wife getting in to the store on Sunday before noon. Now I just need to find a cheap DDR400 (PC3200) dual channel RAM kit.

Let's assume this Acer PC is $219 (after I sell the 17" LCD for $120).

$20 more for this Acer, which is the better PC and why?

Hoping to get $140 for the LCD so price is about even. Acer PROs: 512mb (2X256 dual channel) RAM with two open slots; 3 pci slots, 1 x16 PCI-Express slot, 160GB SATA 7200 HDD, 300W PSU.

Originally posted by: bchrengIt's also a socket 939, running on an nForce 410/430 -based motherboard with integraded sound and geforce 6100 integrated video.

I bought one the other day and the quality is pretty high. They're almost right up there with Compaqs and HPs. It's a perfect platform to start with and seems to have great potential for upgrading.

Cons: No case fan, slightly slower Sempron.

The Acer can be upgraded to a mid-level gamer while the Compaq lacks the PCI-E slot.

NO REBATES!!!

the compaq rossman is talking about has a pci-e slot.

compaq 1710 ------vs------ this acer

sempron 3400(64bit) ------ sempron 3200, not sure if it's 64bit enabled.
both socket 939

1x256 ddr ------ 2x256 ddr
both have 4 ram slots

100gb maxtor hd ------ 160gb seagate hd with 5yr warranty

ati motherboard ------ nvidia motherboard
both integrated video of similar quality/performance i think.

2 sata ports ------ 4 sata ports

3 pci ports ------ 3 pci ports

7 usb ports ------ only 4 usb ports? according to the specs on circuitcity's website.

2 firewire ports ------ 1 firewire

i believe the acer has more free 3.5 bays for additional hard drives.
i believe the acer has better integrated sound(7.1)
i believe neither have casefans installed.

uhohs that pretty much lays out the differences.

I counted 3 front and 5 rear USB ports on the Acer. Looks like only one firewire on the Acer.

The Acer comes with a month of free Norton and there is an Acer "E" help icon on the desktop and an "E" hot button on the keyboard, but very little other bloatware.

It was so nice not to have to say NO to AOL thrity times during the setup.

Damn - stupid USPS moving thingies don't have CC coupons in PA. Cheapskates!

I'm really on the fence on this one - do you think I could throw in my 1 GB stick of 2700 DDR RAM as a temporary measure into this thing? I realize I would probably have to remove the existing 512 for this.

Thoughts?

First: I have now idea what a "USPS moving thingie" is or where to get them other than buying someones Free coupons for $$$ off eBay.

Second: If you find one in stock grab it! The Acer has 4 RAM slots and comes with 2x256 DDR400 PC3200 dual channel. Not sure what affect the slower 1Gb would have on the existing ram.

Is this a better deal than what you can get from Dell for a comparable price (their $300 entry systems)?

This Acer gave me 6k+ on 3DMark05 with my 7600GT, not too shabby.
I am put 2 PC2700 256mb ram sticks (from my old comp) into the 2 open slots and I must say it is running quite smoothly.

I'm getting about 90 fps on CSS @ 1440 X 900. I just sent in the rebates today for the 19" WS, hopefully Viewsonic will send me some monay later this year.

edit: also played fear, doom3, and quake 4 on it with medium-high settings and had no problems.

Yeah, I have to try again tomorrow. I tried to get the Viewsonic substituted and the sales guy had a mini-conniption.

He had me wait while he went to the manager to ask permission and the manager said I could only buy the Acer monitor.

No sale.

So I thought the Viewsonic monitor had only one rebate - it has a $50 one too?

<NEVER MIND on rebate - I see its through Viewsonic on any combined purchase. Now I just have to get a sales rep to sell me the damned combo>

Does the Acer LCD monitor that comes with this package have any ghosting issues with it's 8ms response rate?

Paid $350 (used $40 off coupon) out the door, if I get the rebate the cost will be $270.
I never thought I'd ever be paying low that for a comp + monitor that I can acutally get some use out of.

I went back to the CC with $40 off coupon and picked up an evga 7600gt ko for $160, there is a $20 rebate. So if all the rebates come in, I got the comp + vid card + 19" viewsonic ws for a grand total of $410. :music:

Hi there,

This model just came back in stock at our local CC - so I'm wondering if anyone could give me a sense of how this machine would compare to my current one:

A Gateway P4 2.0Ghz, 512 2700 Ram, ti4600 AGP video card w/ a 160 W power supply.

Since it sounds like I could move that 512MB RAM over to the Acer (for the time being at least) that seems good. What would the onboard video be like compared to my old 4600?

Thanks for any info.

Is it all on stock PSU?

Wow - finally found a sales person who let me substitute the Viewsonic. For a net $320 after rebates its a no-brainer!

So here's where I show how long its been since I upgraded my PC. I have one 1 Gb 2700 stick and one 512MB 2700 stick available. Can I only put in memory that is the same size? In other words, four 256MB sticks or two 512MB sticks?

And do I need to put them in pairs or can I just drop in the one 1 GB stick?

Thanks for the answers and please show pity on the ignorant

No, you can mix and match. You can even mix 2700 you have and 3200 that's already istalled.

If you want to dual channel the ram the sticks should be same.

AnyMal, yes it is all on the stock 300W PSU. 7600GT recommends at least 350W, but no problems so far.

I would say the cpu is about twice as fast as yours, but your video card is about twice as fast in 3dmark01, but a cheap PCI-E video card like a x800 128mb for $65.00 after rabte would bat the ti4600 pretty well and have direct-x 9.0 effects, and play all games at 800x600 mimmum, and most at 1024 x 768 medium settings.

i think this would be a good upgrade for ya, and allow you to further expand in the future unlike the P4 you have which is mosty likely not wroth upgradeing, in a couple years you could go dual core and 4gb ram, and nice pci-e graphics card for a few hundred bucks or so.

Wow a Sempron 1.8Ghz is about twice as fast as a P4 2.0Ghz! My old work computer is a P4 2.20Ghz with 1Gb PC2700 RAM, maybe I should have gotten another Acer for myself. I dropped in an EVGA 7600GS with passive cooling and am looking for some dual channel RAM for the Acer now. Planning to swap the Sempron for a dual core 64 in a year when prices go down. Also looking for a fan to to suck air from below the GPU out the PCI slot at the back of the case. I heard Arctic Cooling has something like that.

Also I picked up a moving kit from USPS but did not find any CC coupons

Homeappraiser, I saw a few of the PCI exhaust fans at CC. I was thinking about getting one, I asked the sakes rep about them and I don't think he really knew much about them. He said I would be fine with a a regular case fan.
I think at a minimum you should get an exhuast fan for the case.

My 7600gt idles around 53, which isnt too hot. Ill attach a zalman cooler onto it later when I want to overclock it.
Look to see what your temps are to guage how much cooling you actually need.

You got it lucky with your 7600GT ... when I received mines for the dell 5150..it's burning like mad @ 60 idle and 82 on load. Luckily I ordered a zalman VF 900, it's easy to install and made a whole world of a difference

now it idles @ 45 C and 60 Con load
