$1299 - rebates ($100+$100)

final cost is $1099

since Acer is not a very popular name as Dell, HP or Toshiba but the laptop product is of the same standard as these name branded produce

this is a very good price for the specifications

its been tested by cnet and they say a non dedicated 64mb memory card does a very good job without interfearence to playing games which need more dedicated memory.

But according to Best Buy,

Cache Memory 1.0GB on die Level 2

Finally Intel is putting enough cache on their chips! With 1 gigabyte of cache, things will always be in cache.

I don't think so, but it gave me a smile.

Ahhhh, trust me. I don't care if the video ram is shared, not shared, docked onto the back of the laptop like a 5th wheel trailer - intel "extreme" graphics are slow, the gpu is SLOW, then add on the slow memory. You'd be lucky to break 1000 3dMark2k1SE with a 3ghz chip coupled with that graphics chipset.

Not trying to crap or flame...

See my first post in this thread and the resulting replies. I only claimed it wouldn't be good IFF you wanted to game.

This laptop (Acer Travelmate 290LMi on BB) can spank Dell laptops with these setups based on BAPCo MobileMark2002 performance ratings (Mobile application performance running on only the battery):

Dell Inspiron 8500 series
Windows XP Home; 2.4GHz Intel Pentium 4-M; 512MB DDR SDRAM @ 266MHz; Nvidia GeForce4 4200 Go 64MB; IBM Travelstar 40GN 40GB 5,400rpm

Dell Inspiron 5100
Windows XP Pro; 2.53GHz Intel Pentium 4; 256MB DDR SDRAM 266MHz; ATI Mobility Radeon 7500 32MB; IBM Travelstar 40GN 40GB 5,400rpm

Dell Inspiron 300m
Windows XP Home; 1.2GHz Intel Pentium M; 384MB DDR SDRAM 266MHz; Intel 82852/82855GM/GME Extreme Graphics (up to 64MB); Hitachi DK23EB-40 40GB 5,400rpm

Dell Inspiron 600m
Windows XP Professional; 1.6GHz Intel Pentium M; 512MB DDR SDRAM 266MHz; ATI Mobility Radeon 9000 64MB; IBM Travelstar 40GN 40GB 5,400rpm

Also, this laptop is not meant for intense gaming. You have been warned. =D

I'm in. My only problem is Best Buy. Look for a 30 day turnaround time if you have a hardware defect. Most At'ers can fix their Bios, drivers and software problems on their own. BB is not IBM, or HP in terms of service. Their PSP is not worth the price and their tech people start at $10 an hour and are hired based on their sales ability. not on their technical prowess (my teenage son was a tech and I helped him with many problems). I have met a few techs that are MCSE, but that's a rarity. In a nutshell - service and BB do not belong in the same sentence.

As for the notebook - the performance rivals the 1.6 centrino laptop of other makers. If the reliabilty holds up then this is a tremendous bargain as a business machine. I can work a whole coast to coast airplane trip without loading myself down with an extra battery. Gaming? Get a desktop! Go graphics or ATI 9200 is state of the art in notebooks. Laughable in a desktop made for gaming.

This laptop is not for gaming...seriously. The laptop is strictly built for applications and work. The word "gaming" shouldn't even be considered. This laptop is built for true mobile performance. It's main uses are typing, internet surfing, and DVD watching. I've used it for about 2 weeks and I love this thing. What more can you ask for when you get 5.3 hours of battery life, 512MB PC2700, a Centrino setup, and best of all, THE DVD-RW!

I REPEAT, this laptop is built for true mobile performance. If you want a desktop replacement, don't get this.

Hmm. This deal sounds familiar . . .

I bought one a couple of weeks ago on 18 month free financing. It is an excellent machine that exceeds my needs (which do not include gaming). As has been pointed out, you simply will not find a notebook with Centrino, 512 mb DDR, DVDRW, integrated 802.11b, bluetooth, etc, for anywhere near the price. The nearest competetitors I have seen are hundreds of dollars more.

Last night, I used it for over 3 hours on the battery. The battery meter showed just under 45% left. Now, that is mobile performance in my book.
