So for all of you who bought this monitor or own it how does it look for gaming? I'm seriously considering buying this but I'd really like to how if it has extremely bad ghosting/colors or anything else?

Right now I can't decide....save up more money and drop a chunk on the Dell 24" 2407WFP-HC, buy the 22" Samsung 226BW that is so highly reviewed on Newegg for $300, or buy this Acer for $400 with $100 rebate...

The Samsung and Dell are highly regarded and reviewed, but I can't find shit about this Acer, so I'm still kind of weary. What do you guys think?

A 24" LCD screen for $300 can't be beat, even if it's a TN panel. Obviously, at this price point it's no Dell 2407WFP-HC but I went to Best Buy to check out this monitor and it looked alright. There was nothing absolutely horrible about it, so I think I might spring for this deal.

At the worst, I buy this monitor, send the $100 rebate off, get my $100 rebate around ~ 2 months, then if I don't like the monitor I could just sell it on E-bay and make most of my money back. Just keep the original box and everything else that way you don't lose much money when selling on E-bay.

If any of you guys are thinking about this deal, don't order it online immediately, check to see if one of their stores is close by you. That way you can drive there and have one of their people open the box and fire it up to check for dead pixels. They have stores in alot of states.

I wonder how this panel compares to the Soyo 24" at Office Max for $299?

I went to Best Buy again to check it out, the viewing angles were great...I noticed when I looked at the LCD panel from underneath it or from the very top the colors looked the same. For other TN panels, if you do this the colors look all messed up...I don't know if this on was just special or something...

I want more people who have bought this monitor to comment on it

Just received mine this morning and very happy with the purchase -- no dead pixels and looks damn good with 1080i OTA content. Even assuming this is a TN panel, the viewing angles are quite good and not as bad some of the samsung ones I've seen.

I compared the AL and X series 24" acer's side by side in the store and even though they have the exact same specs they do not have the same pannel or backlight, the AL looked brighter and had slightly better side to side viewing angles at the same contrast and brightness settings, based on the viewing angles its a safe bet the X241WSD is a TN pannel. Still w/ my 8800GTS w/ the DVI connection it looks damn good at 1920x1200, even better than my 22 @ 1680x1050, at at about 1/2 the cost of most other 24" lcd's I'm willing to give up a bit to get that quality of display w/ a 3 year factory warrenty.

edit: also as an FYI before I purchased my display I had the sales rep at micro center unbox and fire it up to ensure no dead pixels (they were willing to do this w/ no charge), the first display i powered up had 2 stuck blue pixes and a dead one right in a row on the far right hand side also another dead one slightly higher up. So I had them open up another one which was perfect, but even the one w/ the 4 defective pixiles looked good as they were all at the edge.

there are 2 AL models. one is TN and one is MVA

How does Gaming look? Ghosting or anything?

No ghosting for me. But I only tried ET and Wc3.

If you crouch down underneath the LCD monitor (Or tilt it) and look up at it from a 90 degree angle do the colors looked messed up like most TN's?

I did this at Best Buy and I was surprised it didn't change much, when I did this to the other TN panels they had there at Best Buy the colors would look all jacked up.

Just curious if the one I looked at was "special" or something because I was very surprised the viewing angles were as good as they were for a cheap TN panel.

For a TN pannel it had great viewing angles, I forget the exact AL Model I was looking at but it was the 499 one w/ the MVA pannel. Neverwinter Nights 2 looked awesome at 1920x1200 on this

edit: the Pannel does have the typical TN vertical viewing issues.

I bought one of these at the local Micro Center after seeing it in action. No bad pixels on the set I walked out with, although a few models in the store did have some at the far right edge of the screen. I'm very happy with it. I concur, it does behave like a TN panel would be expected to... but there's something that needs to be clarified here. I've been wondering why some people haven't seen any TN-characteristic color distortion, especially at vertical viewing angles... well, I think I've figured out why. The default setting of the contrast is 50/100 - and is quite bright. At high contrast settings, there is very little to no color distortion at any viewing angle. But, if you lower the contrast... BINGO - there it is. High contrast is how some TN displays seem to be getting around the limitations of that technology.

That said, even with my contrast set at 22/100, I never notice the viewing angle problems unless I leave my seat and crouch on the floor to look up at the monitor. The most visible distortions are seen from below the monitor. Looking down at it from above, I don't see any problems, except for slight changes in the brightness; from all horizontal viewing angles off center, I only notice a slight yellowing or reddening of the whites and, to a lesser degree, the colors. It's not troubling to me.

I was using a very nice 19" CRT that had such a clear display at 1600x1200 that I didn't want to trade it for anything... until now. 1920x1200 looks so darn good that I don't want to go back, ever. (Nevermind the extra room I have on my desk!) And while text becomes a little bit blurry at some lower resolutions, this is typical of LCDs, isn't it? That held me back at first - but now I think that I'll rarely, if ever, leave 1920x1200.

sticking with 1920x1200 too. for lower resolutions, you might want to try enabling cleartype to improve the blurry text issue (assuming you use windows xp).

I just got my Soyo 24" this PM and was very happy. No rebates, No hassle! With a coupon I got it for $289 + tax. This thing is huge!

I've seen Acer LCD on the bargain but after being burn with an Acer monitor in the past, I never and will never buy Acer again! Not just monitors but any product by them. Of course, that is just me and do not intend to influence others either.

Call my cynical or whatever, but I've been burned by what seems like everybody over one thing or another. Dell's been a heavy offender in my recent experience, and there's a long line of others. High tech comes with risks, and it's common for mediocrity (at best) in both service and product quality to be accepted as status quo. That's what keeps costs down and release dates early, I suppose. I've come to expect problems. For me, Acer has always come out a favorable choice in the end, but I'm always doing tons of research before buying anything relating to computers. I know, for instance, of at least one Acer computer (which I almost bought) that ships with such an underpowered power supply that the systems commonly fail very quickly and hard; I'd guess Acer's not happy with that anymore than I am... but still, it got through the cracks and now it's the consumer's problem. I once swore off Asus, to give another example, and yet just bought a motherboard from them for a friend because it was available, met my needs, and got a soaring review. I look for reliability at a good price wherever I can get it, I guess.

Speaking only for myself: My new Acer monitor is problem-free, and Micro Center was willing to take it back if I found even one bad pixel or any other thing that made me unhappy. I'm impressed and happy. I know that there were some bad ones in the store, and didn't want the risk if I couldn't have gotten out of it like that.

So, how's the Soyo screen? Please tell!

Damn I was planning on just ordering it since the closest store to me here in PA is a 3 hour drive away. But after you said "there were some bad ones in the store" I'm afraid I'll get one shipped to me that has dead pixels. I guess I could always ship it back but that is extra money. Hmmmmm....I wonder if I called them and ordered it and asked them if they could fire it up and test it for dead pixels before sending it to me? I wonder if that is an option or if they will even do something like that. I guess I'll have to call them during my lunch break to find out.

I'm not sure you can have them do that if you order online, but I know you can do it in store, I got a perfect one but it was the 2nd one the first had some issues even the display model had a stuck blue pixel in the middle. But as Egregius stated it still looks darn good

o kust tried that trick with my 20" TN. didn't do much except lose brightness in the top region.
