So, for the first time, I have a house to myself and a woman, with a backyard and everything. I'd like to get a grill to have the occasional get together with my fiancee's family.

What should I look for in a grill? It'll go on concrete, but not have a shelter (I guess I'll buy a grill cover). I'll use it occasionally, but not every day or two days. Max attendees for get-togethers will be 15, but probably closer to 10.

Weber.

Weber Spirit or Genesis if you want to spend the extra money. The E-310 is nice and provides plenty of cooking space.

Weber. Was the first thing that I moved into my new house. Was set up and on the deck before any piece of furniture ever arrived and worth every penny.

I'm not sure if you're specifically looking for a gas grill, but even if you are I would still pick up a Weber kettle. Can't beat the taste of charcoal and it does everything from grilling to slow smoking. Oh, and they are cheap.

Weber Genesis EP-330 for best value. Stainless steel guts without the stainless steel exterior that is more expensive and harder to clean. Typically not available at Home Cheapo or Blowes, you can find them at smaller places like Agway or maybe Ace.

If you don't want to pay extra for a Weber, buy an extreme cheap one if you can store it under roof. Grills are killed by rain/rust/spiders/bugs....usually the burners will fail due to rust and gunk build up. Webers will too though the grill surface isn't cheap...they are cast iron, I believe...

I bought a $44 grill from Walmart in 2009 ($94 + $50GC free). I still use it. I kept it indoors for like 4 years. It's been outside rotting the past year or so due to my construction project, but still works great.... I just know it'll need to be replaced one of these days because the plastic wheels are broken and the inside is showing its age... $44 for 6+ years ain't bad. Weber couldn't compete with that unless it lasts 30+ years where you'd want to replace it anyhow by then.

Wait, so you are not even married yet and you are already in a legal contract with her on a house?

Well played

If you're only going to get one, get a Weber Spirit or Genesis. My advice is to get that, and also a Weber kettle grill.

Then you have charcoal because that's how it should be done, and you have gas for when it's too windy / dry to safely grill on charcoal.

Yah. My current grill lineup on the patio:

1. Cheap Walmart charcoal grill. Works awesome.
2. Cheap Home Depot gas grill. Works okay. Doesn't get very hot.
3. Gas bayou burner (aka "fish fryer"). Epic.
4. 36" Blackstone griddle from Lowes. Epic.
5. Traeger pellet smoker/grill. Epic.

I think the only thing I would change is investing in a better gas grill. It simply doesn't get as hot as I'd like it to get. It was $129 at Home Depot, which is like bargain basement pricing for a gas unit, and it works for most stuff, but when you really want to flame up some burgers, well...just doesn't get very toasty. I use the bayou burner for doing my smash burgers because it gets up to 600F easily with my cast-iron pan, so I haven't really felt a need to get a better grill.

The Walmart charcoal grill OTOH is great. They go on sale for like $80 or so all the time. It's no Big Green Egg, but it gets the job done & I like the flavor more than gas (but gas is quick, which makes making food fast easy). It's nice for when I have more time or want to cook up a bunch of stuff over a flame, like when family comes over with kids & we need to keep production going, since the coals burn well for awhile.

The griddle is cool, especially for doing breakfasts. You can make like a dozen pancakes no problem. Or pork-fried rice, chicken, all kinds of stuff, it's crazy awesome. The pellet grill is great too, it's almost like an oven. It's basically like a convection of with smoke. Great, repeatable results with minimal babysitting. You can smoke for 18 hours if you want. Piece of cake.

So OP, kind of depends on what you want to do. If you want fast results & only want to use it once in awhile, get a Weber with a cover.

+1 Picking up a Weber EP-330 from Ace tonight. Free assembly too.

There is a good amount of truth to this statement.

I purchased a Huntington Forge (their grills are supposedly made in the same plants as Weber). I've had it a LONG time and it gets EXCEPTIONALLY hot when I want it to (700+).

Thing is, it's just a grill. At this point, things are getting weathered. Rust and other things are taking place. I've replaced the grates with stainless steel ones, as the original porcelain coated cast iron were flaking and depositing into the food. I'm still happy with the grill, but I more so hang onto it as the original investment suggests that I should still work to get more money out of it.

At this point, I suppose I might be inclined to try a nicer quality Weber... but in 5-10 years, I suspect I'll be looking at a 5-10 year old grill that has a bit of wear and tear and I would be inclined to want to replace it.

If I was to simply buy a 100-200 dollar whatever that was of solid build quality from wherever, I'd probably be just fine with it. My only recommendation would be to purchase something with solid quality stainless steel grates. The grates and burners are the most important parts of any grill.

I really love my kitchen aid branded grill from home depot, many of features of higher end grills but not a crazy price. it gets plenty hot and cooks really well.

too late?

i would go for a red-brick oven; cheap, it doubles as a smoker, bbq, and you can bake pizza in it.
