Acoustic Foam for cheap. Stop listening to your whining PC

This is the best deal I've found anywhere on decent acoustic foam.
It's pretty high quality stuff and half the price of a lot of other vendors. Good for putting around a (well cooled) pc.
Like pretty much all of this stuff, it's a good idea to let it "cure" outside for a while or the plasto-industrial-petro fumes will tweak your brainwaves.
Shipping is cheap and fast. $26 for 2" 54x54" sheets that does 2 PCs. I split it with a friend..

nice. would like to put some on the inside panels of the case. get the flame-retardant ones in case the cpu bursts into flames. maybe install a sprinkler system in case of smoke or fire?

sweet finally a place to order accoustic foam again. i used to get it from this one hardware(home hardware) site... but i forgot the address they had so many different kinds.. ah well i used 1" high density sknined foam to coat the inside of my pcs. it was self adhesive too. my pcs are very quiet now. add vantec stealth fans and u got a kewl pc. i don't get how people stand loud pcs.. its a bloody computer.. shouldn't make noise

I bought some acoustic foam for about ~$25. Not this exact one, but similar. Didn't help much. It muzzled the sound a bit; don't expect a night and day difference. Then again, it could be my 2-10k rpm scsi drives that's causing all the noise. Oh well.

foamorder.com has some acoustic foam that is quite a bit cheaper (the 1.2lb version), is about as effective, and you can order any size you like.

The 'egg crate' packing foam sheets you get on some stuff when shipped is essentially the same thing. Just save them and not throw them out until needed.

Free is cheap!

I am using foam from dbEngineering. Works very well, especially for high frequencies. Cheap. You can order any size.

RE a couple of other posteres comments:
1. The foam doesn't go on the outside (not generally enough room. You wrap it around the case on the outside. You can use cardboard, tape or even make a wood box to hold it around (which also reduces noise.

2. It DOES make the computer hotter. Make sure you have good ventilation. I use something like a clothes drier duct for the fan output which quiets things a good bit.

3. It won't silence your pc unless you build an enclosure (e.g. seal things up) with ducts for air flow. People have built PCs that can be used inside recording studios using that technique. Otherwise it'll help but not silence the box.

4. The packaging that comes with stuff you buy is NOT the same as acoustic foam. Acoustic foam is higher density and "open cell" which makes it much more sound absorbent. The stuff at foamorder.com seems to be higher density than the stuff I originally posted (and cheaper too).

5. Foam is different than other matting designed to silence PCs (and Cars.) like dynamat That's generally a vinyl (or similar more acoustically dense) material designed to reduce vibration more than it is designed to act as a sound wall. That's a good strategy too. I put some of that around my case under the foam. It helped a little.

WOOOHHH, people. This is acoustic foam -- it's designed to go on your wall as a diffuser to spread out objectionable wall reflections. People put this up in their sound rooms and professional studios. It is not a noise ISOLATOR, which does something different -- attenuates the intensity of sound passing through it. Acoustic foam is a very inefficient material to use for silencing a PC. Dynamat (or generic dynamat) as Rochlin suggested would be better (I've tried it), which would dampen case vibrations (reducing sound transmission) as well as serve as a better barrier than foam.

Edit: Actually, the sound blankets might work, but no specs are available.
