Athena stuff is better than this IMO. Still good deal for those who like this kind of stuff.

This is an amazing deal. These subs are fantastic. I auditioned them side-by-side with Polk, Infinity, and several others. Nothing else can come anywhere close in bass extension or slam in the under $500 category. Furthermore, the power amp is better than most I've heard in this category. I bought this sub for my sister, and I own a pair of AR1s. These drivers are very similar to the 15" woofers in AR's former flagship AR1 tower speakers -- Stereophile recommended component (although the AR1s have 500 watt Sunfire amps).

Great post, Goosemaster.

The problem I have with a sub is where do you put the damn thing ?

Mine is sitting in the middle of the floor for lack of a better place.

Well, the Hsu research VTF-2 does blow this one away in terms of flat response and low distortion. It's ~ $500

Only goes to 30Hz? What's the dropoff at that point I imagine...

But...for $149...not bad.

You can sit right on top..., with some padding.

Best place is a corner. Tho, I've found this to work really well. Place the sub @ your lisening area. Then walk around the room and when the sub sounds it's best place it there.

Good Luck!

Yeah - that's not a bad deal. But after checking out the site - AR are the best that they carry. For your laziness/convenience - They also have KLH, Jensen, and a pair of Advent speakers.

Wow! i had no idea that any Acoustic Research products were Stereophile Recommended Components. I thought they went downhill after the 70s - I stand corrected.

I did read in one of the reviews that the crossover had changed.

"As indicated above, there are two versions of this sub. One has a pair of line inputs and a pair of outputs. The power amp is recessed so that the cooling fins are flush with the cabinet (this is the original model.) The other version has a single mono line level input, and the power amp is not recessed so the cooling fins extend out from the unit about two inches. The two versions can be differentiated while still in the box by looking at the serial number on the box. The S/N of an original model will start with 26. The S/N of a revised model will start with a letter.

The biggest difference between the two models is the top cut-off frequency. The original model has an upper cut-off of 100hz, whereas the revised model is adjustable up to 200hz. I read one review at this site where the reviewer noted that his cut-off was 100hz though the specs on the AR web site said 200hz. This is the reason."

So you're saying that this place is just clearancing th crappier non-adjustable 100Hz model?

I read that and didn't even catch it for some reason. Doesn't DD 5.1 send out a signal that has already gone through a fixed low-pass filter anyway?

I hope I'm wrong about that because it seems silly to me...speaker placement and the frequency-response of your satellites would affect your choice of low-pass frequency.

<----- bought a set of 5 acoustically matched speakers 9 years ago and STILL doesn't have 5.1

If you have a 5.1 receiver its going to set your lowpass for you anyway and unless you want it over 100hz you should be fine.
