How do I shut this off in Win2K? It was working fine till yesterday when I installed a Geforce3. Now when I try to play CS I get major problem with my DSL modem. Everything else seems to work fine but for some reason the modem can't send info out and even just shuts down during CS. I reinstalled the drivers for the modem and even completely reinstalled Half-life and CS but it still doen't work. The only thing I can think is to remove the ACPI and try to run as a standard PC. How do I go about doing this?

Thanks,
Fishingeek

well, before I went to non ACPI I would probably attempt to move the cards in question to non shared slots... however, if you want to change the PC to non-ACPI... you need to go into the device manager and find the entry that says "ACPI BIOS"... click "update driver"... choose "standard PC" from the list of available drivers and then reboot.

do this at your own risk a non useable rig could result from doing this

You can't switch from ACPI to non ACPI (or vice versa) after the OS is installed. While you can go in and change the HAL as gunf1ghter indicated, W2K enumerates hardware VERY differently with the different HALs and you're virtually guaranteed problems.

See .Q246236 for details.

The only way to switch is to change it in the BIOS and reinstall W2K.

However, I doubt that ACPI is the root cause of your problem.

Nevo is giving out what MS says to do... I agree wth the others though because I have done this on about 15 PC's so far without any ill side effects...

However, MS says to not do it because win2k doesn't force a ACPI tree rebuild after a HAL change, so it very well could dump your system.

Well I got the problem fixed by switching my modem to a diff PCI slot. Everything works good now but my 3Dmark scores are in the 390s. I should be in the 5s or even 6s. I have reinstalled the AGP driver and am using the 12.90 detenators. I am thinking of just taking the card back.

pyr, I do indeed know what I'm talking about. Did you not read the KB article I linked?

KB article aside, I got this information straight from the developers who wrote the PnP code for Windows 2000.

Didn't mean to start a flame war here. All is well now. Changing the PCI slots and tweaking my settings for the card now have my marks up to 5567. Thanks for the help anyways.

The geek is right: my comments are tending towards a flame war. My bad. Pyr, my apologies if my tone was out of line.

Bottom line: while changing the HAL may appear to work, I just want everyone to know that it might indeed cause Very Bad Things to happen, and it is not supported.

I wasnt saying you were deliberately lying or anything, just that you were wrong in saying that 'You can't switch from ACPI to non ACPI (or vice versa) after the OS is installed.' I know that MS does not recommend it, and that it could possibly cause problems, but it isnt likely that it will. Ive done this myself and my system has been a lot stabler and faster since.

I have to agree with Mr. Pyr.

I have read the KB article but I also have changed several machines from ACPI to STDPC with success.
I don't mean to add fuel to a potential flame session but merely wanted to share my experience.

Fishingeek just didn't give us all the information to answer his question. The IRQ conflict would have been easy to diagnose if he had said he moved his cards around to different slots from what was originally working. All motherboards share IRQs among PCI slots, and these are usually listed in the motherboard manual. ACPI doesn't just suddenly rear up and bite you. Amazing how many people blame it for causing a conflict that they have created themselves.

I had everything in the same spot that was working. When I chanaged from my Geforce2 to the Geforce3 it started giving me problems. Everything was wroking great before that. Unfortunately my manual doesn't list which slots share IRQs. It had 6 PCI slots and I had the modem in slot 3 thinking it would be fine there. When I switched it to slot 4 everything went back to normal. So no I did not move it from the original spot till after I started having problems.
