Great find. But, be aware that this version requires that Norton Ghost also be installed on your system.

They require you to enter a UPC code from the *box* of Ghost even before they'll email you ordering instructions. This does me no good... I bought it via the symantec online store as a download.

Google for "ghost 2002 upc" - the second link returned has the info you'll need.

I used Acronis 6 to do a successful complete partition backup&restore a couple weeks ago. It has a strange bug when typing in the network address for a network restore-- you have to click the mouse a couple times before *every* letter you type.

I haven't done a network restore yet, I will try it and see if I get the same bug.

I found a UPC code of 037648209953. This is for Ghost 2002. I have the Ghost the came with SystemWorks Pro. Will it work with that? I don't think it's that different, just a personal edition.

Not so hot for me. I bought the program and have tried to use it four times. It hangs in the middle on every attempt. I have wasted about eight CDs (no great loss, I know, except for the time) and it wouldn't even work on an old hard drive that I installed just for that purpose.

Anyone else have better luck (or better technical skills)?

If you look at one of the perk of Ghost 2003, it also does imaging through a Windows interface now. So, it looks like systemWorks Pro will be the way I go.

True Image 6.0 works in Windows with no need to reboot to DOS, surf the web while you backup your partitions. Ghost 2003 still reboots to DOS which means the machine is busy and you have to wait til it's done to have your computer back.

Are you trying to burn an image directly to cd ?

I don't recommend this because it uses packet writing software which will of course freeze up. Instead create the image directly to the hard drive spanned to 700 megs so you can burn the pieces to cd-r's with nero.

It's been working with no glitches this way for me.

This is a quote from Symantesc web site under the specs for Ghost 2003. What does this mean if you are saying that Ghost does not work under a windows interface like True Image?

I'm not trying to be problematic or cause arguments here. I just want this clarified before I spend my money either way.

From Symantecs web site! "NEW! Windows® interface makes it easy to backup and restore data"

Thanks!

I bought this program based on this thread, but it has never worked properly. I have tried CDs and hard drive to hard drive backups, and it hangs every time. Is this an XP problem, or operator error?

(Recognizing that a line like that is certain to provoke many witty responses from participants in the forum.)

I have used this product many times to image client machines and I would recommend using it instead of Ghost if you don't need some of the more advances features that Ghost has. And it is definately a perk not having to go into DOS to make an image.

i dont know...

i used the acronis os selector and now i have to reformat more than likely. i emailed cust. serv. which got back with me but it'll probably be more of a hassle than just reformatting. got part. magic and it was very easy. whatever you do make sure you have some fat32 space on your harddrive before using Acronis OS Selector. the way i read it, it sounded as if you could use the floppy disks to change some of the ntfs partition to fat32 but apparently there must be some fat32 on you hd somewhere for the program to work. never used true image but i wished i would have now!

So, will True Image write to NTFS partitions? Does ghost 2003? Not a big deal, but would give me more options.

Running out of Windows intrigues me. If Ghost 2003 can be set up in Windows, and reboots itself to DOS to function, I could live with that. At the end of the day, I'd like to simply image my drive. If I could set it up in Windows, click "Image", and walk away, I don't care if it boots to Dos to do it's thing (although it would be nice to have it relaunch Windows when it's done so that machine will be all ready for me the next morning). Right now, having to shut down Windows and wait for Ghost to boot to DOS before setting up the image is a PITA.

Ideally, I'd like to have my disk imaging software run on a schedule. Will either True Image or Ghost 2003 do this?

I bought this based on this deal after I found out that the SystemWorks Pro 2001
that I have will not image across a network. Imaged my NTFS notebook drive directly
from in W2K and then restored to new drive using the boot-CD option. To my suprise,
it found my PC-Card network adapter (FE575) and network file share w/o any hitch.
Restore went great - only problem I had was that for some reason it didn't upsize the
partition to the total available space. Haven't retested so I'm not sure it this was my
fault or theirs... but it definately did work and was exactly what I needed.

I don't see any scheduling stuff in the manual (or command-line options), but I bet
you could find a way to trigger it off using some macro/scripting tool.

Hope this helps.
