An outstanding program has gotten better. Several GUI improvements, especially in the bootable CD it makes. I just used itto clone my laptop's HDD via Firewire link. Excellent result.

The upgrade is only $29.95 if you have version 8.

Yes, I just ran a test and it backed up designated folders full of .JPG images directly on to my Plex 716UF burner. I then checked it with Windows Explorer, and the backup file was there.

I never use it that way - but I had to find out.

Thanks for looking -- DVD support was one of the main (only?) flaws in 8. Looks like it's time to upgrade

Hmmm, according to the Acronis FAQ on version 9, it still requires you to preformat DVD discs using 3rd party packet writing software ( Ahead, Roxio, etc. ). Think I'll wait until the dust settles.

Cheers.

Can you exclude certain directories when creating an image? Like Recycle Bin, Temp etc.

That is the one feature I use alot in Retrospect. I would like to switch to Acronis, as the Retrospect UI is complete rubbish.

Apparently, yes. It also provides a new file/folder-based backup option. I'd be interested in hearing how it works; anyone try it yet?

Cheers.

I already have it, upgraded from version 8 but I have problems. IF I go to create an image by using the boot cd, at the end of the image creation it tells me it has completed with errors.

I did it using a +R blank right out of the box - no problem. Maybe that is for incremental backup where you want to add things on a schedule?

My principle use is cloning drives using the TI prepared bootable CD.

I had that happen once - but changed blank disks and it was OK the next time.

Perhaps it is too much to hope for but can TI clone disks any quicker than Ghost? Is there a small (less than 1.44MB) self-contained DOS exectutable or does it require a Linux boot CD?

Quickness is relative to the size of the drive, the amount of data on it, and the CPU's speed. I don't know what Ghost does - I have never used it. Been cloning HDDs for years - and TI 9 takes about 13 minutes to clone a 80 GB drive with about 45 GB worth of data on it.

TI has always created bootable CDs (very automatically) that produce a Linux-based OS along with a GUI. It then can clone anything - USB, Firewire, NTFS, FAT32, etc. It can see all drives, internal and external.

I never run it from within Windows - I prefer a fully independent bit-by-bit copy without regard to sharing violations, etc.

Another advantage of the bootable CD is that is can then be used on any computer - and doesn't even have to be installed on it.

Ja, I was thinking if a proggy could be just 10% more efficient or sumfing then it would be worth the time 'cause 90 min clonings of large drives are for ze birds. I've been using Ghost since the last millennium sans issue and it is convenient (never bother with Windows bloat just the good ol' 1MB exe, although the tidgy self-contained Ghost Explorer is useful for file extractions within Windows) but I keep hearing good things aboot TI.

what do you guys make of all the negative posts on the Acronis support website?
Looks to me like there are a lot of unhappy customers out there who thought 9 would be better than 8 and ended up with a buggy release.
Anybody who have run both care to make a comparison on bugs... CorkyG????
