I haven't personally tried one out yet, but I like working from my bed, and want to make sure the vents don't get blocked up by the blankets and stuff.

As for comparing acrylic to aluminum, I assume the aluminum is better, but the cheapest I've seen those for is like $20-$25 + shipping.

I just placed an order for one of these, so I'll update you guys once i get it.

1. Some laptops get hot to the point that people have reported burns on their laps (I've seen one news article where a guy had a 2nd degree burn, because he was so into what he was doing). This would provide a nice little barrier from the heat.

2. Cooling a computer often boths a) Helps it run more efficiently b) extend the life of all components inside.

It looks like it's powered via USB, so you could put it on for when you'll be putting it on your lap, or flat surfaces when it doesn't need to be uber-portable. And I've purchased from Nexfan before, delivered what I ordered, ahead of schedule. Good stuff.

Hot deal for Laptop owners.

when an aluminum version was posted as a deal over at ben's bargains, he also linked a review of the device. the conclusions from the review said that the aluminum material was not a significant factor in cooling, while the fans and the open space below the laptop did the work. the aluminum was not effective because it requires direct contact with the surface that needs cooling in order to conduct the heat effectively. there are little studs on the tray of these things that hold the notebook off the surface a bit (prolly to allow the fans' airflow to service a larger area).

so anyway, i don't recall the review site, but you can maybe dig up the deal at ben's. the main point here is that, when the fans were turned off, cooling was negligable (attributable to the extra space below laptop). when they were on, there was a significant cooling effect (maybe 13 degrees F? can't remember).

so the acrylic material is likely to be just as good as the aluminum.

Thanx for posting the existence of a laptop cooler. I've long wanted a convenient type of active cooling pad to keep the laptop's own internal fan from coming on due to heat. In the past, I had to prop up the laptop on a hard surface so that there was at least one inch of free air space under the laptop to keep that darn fan from coming on. Previously, I had been using the USB powered single fan that you can buy at CompUSA in their notebook accessories section. Instead of turning that fan to cool me, I just turned that fan around to cool the laptop.

From looking at the larger picture, the cooling pad fans simply blow through to the other side, so if you are sitting the pad on a soft surface like a bed the fans' exhaust will be blocked. The other cooling pad that nexfan sells is a three fan model that runs at a higher RPM and is louder.

Note: Before ordering from a yahoo site such as nexfan, be sure to delete all your yahoo cookies unless you want yahoo to link your order info with your yahoo pseudonyms/emails....

I have model NB 600, 3 fan version laptop cooler. Works great! This is even better because it gets power via USB. Mine needs a transformer. Little difference in the CFM air flow between mine and this one. I am getting one to cool my external drives.

Got the order from Nexfan, in Pa, so shipped really fast. All in great shape. A little dissapointed with the cooler it is very low quality and looks homemade. However fans are not loud and design is pretty innovative. The round cables are excellent and the price of the acasa acoustic matts was exceptional, got several boxes. Thanks for heads up on a good deal and a good company, I will buy from them again. I had to go and get a laptop to go with this cooler though, argh.

alyosha, I guess you are learning this the hard way, but I've learned that if a hot deal requires other things in order to make it work, and those other things add up to the price that you pay for the original hot deal after IR/ PM, MIR, and/or BVG, then I don't buy the hot deal for myself, and either plan to sell it right when i buy it or just not bother with it at all. I'm a firm beliver in this code and it's sometimes good to have rules even when it comes to hot deals .

REVIEW: two fan USB-powered laptop cooler

Shipping:

Received it right away. The product was shipped in another box rather than having a shipping label slapped onto the original product box.

Description:

I will oversimplify the description to avoid writing a ton of words. Imagine an acrylic "Z" shape with the ends of the "Z" short and the slanted vertical part of the "Z" long. One of the two short legs of the "Z" is shorter than the other; this shortest leg is closest to you. By having the shortest leg close to you, the laptop keyboard is tilted upwards at a nice angle. The acrylic is thick and doesn't flex under the weight of my heavy Inspiron. Each of the two fans is a dc brushless fan by Young Lin Tech Company Ltd, Model DFS601505L, 5volts at 1.1 watts. They get power by tapping the USB power lead. These fans are screwed into the acrylic and have no fan guards. This means that the laptop cooler must be used on top of a hard surface. If used on your lap or soft surface, well, you should note that the fan blades are completely exposed on the bottom....

There is a mini slide switch on the back along with a USB socket so that it doesn't use up your USB port if your laptop has only one port (a thoughtful feature). The hole for the switch is rather unprofessional as it looks like it was drilled and then hand-filed (jaggy and lots of file marks). The USB cable is rather short; it barely reaches my Dell Inspiron's port. If you have a laptop with the port on the left side, you will need to extend the cable as it is so short it will only reach ports located on the rear or the right side of the laptop case. The usb socket provided is one of the cheaper ones that doesn't "click" when you push the male connector in; all you feel is a "sliding" action as you push the connector in.

There are 8 plastic feet about 5mm tall to hold the laptop off the surface. This allows for a small but effective air space for the fans. The fans are quieter than my laptop's own cooling fan. The placement of the feet leaves something to be desired for Inspirons as they are located in bad positions: right where the door lids are on the Inspiron's bottom. By sliding the laptop around, I found a location where the plastic feet would not push against the delicate parts of the laptop's bottom which are the lid covering the video card, and the lid covering the memory slots. The lids aren't meant to support weight and excessive pressure might push them into the electronic parts or traces and cause a short (inspiron lids have a metal shield on the inside...).

Operation:

All you have is a on/off slide switch. Because there are no guards on the fans, you must operate on a hard surface because the two fans are exposed underneath.

Testing:

Before connecting to my dear laptop's single usb port (if it burns out, I am screwed), I did testing with a powered usb hub connected to the laptop. That way, any stress would be to the hub. I turned the unit on and off quickly many times via the slide switch and no problem occurred from surge current by the fans. So, it seems pretty safe. I didn't test with a self-powered usb hub because from experience, large power loads make other connections to the hub unreliable.

Overall:

I would buy it again at the bargain price. It cools quite well due to air flow across the bottom of the laptop. It is quiet.

The USB cable is too short for my VAIO too. It has to reach near the front of the right side of the laptop. Need to find a cheap extension cable.

It looks like the cheapest way to "extend" the cable is to take your existing hub and just hook the cooler pad up to it. A extension cable costs too much for what it does and it might not be re-usable in the world of high speed USB 2.0.
