Well its basically a free rare for 15 scraps or whetstones. I like to stick with 4 link gloves, boots, and helms when I do this because scraps are cheaper than whetstones. If I get an unid'd rare that's 10+ quality, I save it for the 2 alch recipe.
That 5% quality per white item, versus blue or yellow, also works with maps and chisels. If I get a high level map, I almost always use four chisels on it, before trying an orb of chance or trans orb on it.
I don't use armor scraps/whetstones on whites before alch'ing them though... I have around 200 of each type, so if I do get a good rare, I can easily quality it to 20% without putting a large dent in my supplies. If you pickup quality items (armor/weaps), and sell 40% total combined quality at once, you get armor scraps or whetstones. One run of say Fellshrine can net you quite a few in a quick time.
For the 7 iron ring craft, most merchants sell iron rings also, so if you got a ring you want to try your luck on, but no iron rings, just go shopping.
All I'm doing now, is picking up certain 65+ level items in maps, and trying my luck with them. Too bad I'm not Lightning based, because I got a 80% spell dmg, +2 lightning skills, added lightning damage, projectile speed wand with resists from that (time to make an arc witch :O ).
So I've been playing alot of POE lately. It seems the only way to deal damage is to stack wrath, anger, weapon elemental, and use static blows.

or if your not using blood magic/resolute technique, use hatred/grace/purity/reduced mana combo.
so what if you're not dealing as much dmg.. they're frozen.
also, are non-quest gems getting cheaper?
just bought my 2nd elemental hit and 2nd chain for 1 chaos each. (will be used for new ranger that's going to do hatred/grace/purity/reduced mana combo.)
and i thought it was cheap when i paid 2 chaos each a couple of week ago.
Had a shot at a Demigod's last night in the Ancestral race... Was 3rd place ranger for most of the race, and way behind Nugiyen... Then he and the other ranger died in the last ten minutes. Knew I had my shot so I went hard out farming coves, but two rangers passed me. 3rd is my highest place so far though! I'm getting better!

found the unique cloth belt which is +24 all attributes and +9% quantity. then enabled me to take off my +20dex ring and add a ring with iir/iiq.
i'm back to farming docks at 90%/90% rarity/quantity even tho i just got the Eternal Labortory.

My witch is high IIR/IIQ also (think 195/60, and 240+/60 if Firestorm kills), but I've been doing maps. It's next to impossible to get perfect gear, like for me a 20% spell dmg + 90% spell dmg + +2 fire gems + cast speed; but in maps, I can find that base Phrophecy wand as a white, and alch/chaos/exalt it.
Spent over 40 chaos easy so far, and even 'wtf did you do?' chaos'ed a +2 lightning + high lightning dmg +cast speed +projectile speed wand. Why I'm running another char now to farm currency orbs to feed my map runner's white possibilities.
Send an invite if you ever want to run maps. I've got about 6-8 on my witch, including some nasty rares with no regen, take chaos damage, 75% fire resist (my attack)... ugh.
well, i killed merci act3 piety and finished the game. just need to open the door to god or whatever it's called w/piety's key.
would love to do low lvl maps with you. just no chaos monsters since i'm running -60% chaos to do 80% resists. i'm lvl 67
Honestly resist gear means jack in this game. You can kill anything in 2-3 hits, except bosses. But even then bosses are just dumb AI and you can hit them, move away, go back and hit them without any trouble.
2k hp -> glass cannon baby! yes, scif your character has a decent HP pool ~4K and good health regen and life gain on hit or leech, then that is enough to deal with the -60% chaos resist
the 4K # applies to HC
can get away with less for SC

merci vaal and piety owned my ass. but i was tired of the grind to get to them (expescially piety) and didnt care at that point.
2-3 hits?! for those of us who dont have a lionseye bow, it takes more than 2-3 hits to kill trash mobs doing solo.
my elemental hit is 3k dps and it takes more than 2-3 hits to kill blues in piety's temple. and dont get me started on Kole...
