straight from the patch notes best explains it (and if you didn't know a league is just what they call their modes like hardcore/default):

Two new four-month leagues (Anarchy and Onslaught) will start at at 1pm Saturday June 8 (NZ time). This is 6pm Friday PST. They will run until October 8.
The Anarchy league contains hostile Rogue Exiles you will occasionally encounter. They use player skills and drop a lot of items on death (including one for each equippable slot).
The Onslaught league is a hardcore league with 20% increased monster attack, cast and movement speeds. These stack with Map mods, so Onslaught is quite a lot more difficult than regular Hardcore. Characters that die in Onslaught are moved to Standard, not to Anarchy.
At the end of the four months, characters in Anarchy are moved back to the Standard league. Characters in Onslaught are moved back to the Hardcore league.

You summed up onslaught exactly right, it's just an extra hard mode that will last 4 months. There have been similar shorter leagues, but this is the first time for one to run 4 months.

I'd make a character now in hardcore and just get a feel for the game. It's a bit of a learning curve.

I didn't start in hardcore. Hardcore just isn't fun for me. Sure, your character moves over to default so no harm done but I just wouldn't enjoy the time spent playing in hardcore anyway, so why bother?

Also, my first char made it to the end (again in default) so it isn't impossible for your first char to last. Most people do end up rerolling, though. I had to use a good bit of respects to rework my first char as well.

I played to level 50ish my first time and never died (that i remember).. felt too easy.. did not know about Hardcore (people here explained it) have played nothing but now.. I have died many times.. I just start over.. many would find that boring as heck.. i find the tense gameplay satisfying and stat building is really a chess game, thinking 10 points ahead at all times.. (i dont read on character builds, i build my own.. and yes one of my 50's is built bad so he is like a porcupine in a room full of balloons.. im so jumpy when i play him i might have a heart attack) Understand its not for everyone. I currently have 3 characters in the 50 area, witch, archer, and a (damn forget, pally? old guy who starts with a club) But i havent played in weeks, been interested in how the new patch is.

easily suggest playing it the way its most fun, hardcore or reg.. don't matter as long as you enjoy it.

I'm thinking about trying to get into this. Should I attempt to create a caster, a melee, or a hybrid, or something else? I'm assuming that classes are typically divided up into similar categories (caster, melee, hybrid).

when i quit months ago, bow ranger was the one to get. ridiculously overpowered supports for the bow plus long range = safe from melee monsters. ie: spam the room with ice arrows = frozen/slowed monsters

since then they have beefed up the melee classes and re-balanced the skills tree.
last i saw multi-strike blink melee was latest.
hit one monster, blink to the next monster, rinse/repeat as long as you have the mana. you (usually) blink faster than the monster can hit you.

I think the most popular build right now is dual spark/fork totem but it's very gear dependent and you can spend 100 exalted orbs getting all the gear, so I wouldn't recommend it for a first char.

that build can do pretty well without much gear and can also scale well with gear. The gems you need are all attainable through quests too.

I went with an elemental wander for first char which worked out well, but it is a bit rough during the transition from melee to wand. http://www.exilepro.com/builds/templar/488-templar-elemental-wander-support basically that but with more dps and less hp. Its a bit harder to get the gems you need for it though and getting a good wand will probably require some trading too.

I'd prefer to start with a class and just sorta wing it as best I can the first time through, or for a little while at least. I will ask what the best class would be, or just a good class choice anyway, to be able to be mostly successful without researching the hell out of the game at first. I'd prefer to play solo almost exclusively (especially at first, I don't want too many gifts or excessive hand-holding).

I think the Templar has been the easiest class for me to get a good balance of damage and survivability, but I have more fun with the Witch.

I am playing on a regular basis. I gave up on my first toon a lvl 52 shadow.
I now have a lvl 66 LA crit frenzy ranger and its a lot more fun.
I do understand the whole first character is usually the one you mess up on.

The only struggle I am having now is getting exalted orbs.
Currently farming docks on Merciless hoping for some decent drops.

I agree entirely. I almost feel like I play Diablo 3 for the polish and production value and play Path of Exile for the deeper mechanics and better gameplay.

POE has extremely deep mechanics and for me that's a win win, challenging but rewarding if you put in the time.

Hit lvl 82 last night on my EK Scion. Thought I was pretty badass with my 6k dps EK, til I ran a map with some guy that has 27k dps... don't know how that is even possible, but map bosses went down in five seconds.

Hoping to get/find a 6L chest now. When I got my 5, it made a huge difference in my dps.

See I am playing on normal softcore which helps reduce the stress factor though 20% xp loss on death doesn't help.
Also my dps is not enough to kill me yet.
My burning arrow is around 4k with haste + 5 point frenzy.
LA is around 1400 per target. Once I get into the mid 70s and get better gear I am sure reflect is going to suck.

It also requires pretty much BIS gear or close to it. Blastrophes guide which I am following is using very specific gear to achieve his Dps.

I still play, thought less than I did in Beta. I find the drops to be too meager and lose interest after awhile. The game is an awesome design, and I do enjoy playing it until the 'too much pain, not enough reward' feeling kicks in.

Ah, so that's why he nearly instantly dies so much... getting a huge crit on a reflect mob I guess. He's getting frustrated with not being able to get to 78, because of deaths.

I'm 59% to 84 now, and haven't died in days; even when jumped by 10 roas and 10 of those jumper things. Reflect doesn't phase me much; on a reflect rare boss with a map with 18% phys reflect... I have to move back for 2 seconds to let my mana refill after 5-6 attacks.

Finally got a 6L chest too! Woot! Cost me 2.5 exalts for a 89 life 40 cold res 8 fire res 6L.
