Just started this game. How do I use one of those gems that convert an item to a magic item.

I have a blue gem that says it converts a normal item to a magic item. I also have a blue orb that can only be used on a magic item.

So, I have helmet that has two blue sockets. I can't get it to accept the magic blue gem, so I assume the item is already magic. However, it won't accept the blue orb either. Seems I can't use either of these blue enhancements in any item with a blue socket and I'm not sure why.

Sounds like some confusion between currency and gems.

Gems are skill gems, either an active skill or a passive. They are placed in items (and can be removed at will) and must match socket color.

Currency items, such as orbs, are consumable and can be used only once on the correct sort of item. You right click the currency and then click on the target to use it, you don't put it into a gem socket and the color of sockets of an item doesn't really effect currency usage at all.

White items are normal (non-magic). Blue are magic. Yellow are rare. Orange is unique.

Is there a transaction that lets you increase stash on yourself and not just the personal one in town? Or is that the same thing? I run to town every 5 min because I get full of stuff i might want down the line.

My apologies, I used the word orb for lack of a better word as the game was closed when I wrote this. Both gems are in my inventory and both are to be used on a piece of armor or weapon. One states that it can only be used on magic items. The other states it turns an ordinary item into a magic item. Both are blue, hence both need to be used in a blue slot. I have a helm with two blue slots. The helm does not look to be magic though it does have buffs on it (+12 strength, etc). I can't attach either of the two gems on the helm and can't figure out why.

If your helm has strength and other bonuses, it's either magic or rare. Look at the color of it's name when you mouse over it. White is a normal item, blue is magic, yellow is rare.

The color of a currency item, or orb, doesn't matter- it's just a cosmetic thing and has no game effect. Gem color needs to match gem sockets, but currency or orb items don't have a color in that sense.

there is no transaction to increase personal inventory

only pick up yellows

if you have a stashful of yellows, then keep a lot of ID scrolls and drop the yellows on the ground that you don't want to keep

White = normal
Blue = Magic
Yellow = Rare
Gold = Unique

Since it's yellow, you will not be able to use an Orb of Augmentation (Magic items only).

You should definitely be able to use an Orb of Transmutation on a white item. It's not socketed at the time is it?

An item you are trying to use currency on cannot be equipped, and it cannot have gems in it. Other than that you just have to meet the specific requirements of that currency.

I think it helps to be really picky about what you pick up. For the most part I would only pick up rares. Another thing to keep in mind is vendor recipes. Vendor recipes allow you to trade a certain combination of items for another item or currency.

For example I always pick up quality % flasks. When you have enough to = 40% you can turn them in for a glassblowers bauble. Always pick up chromatic items also, a chromatic item is an item that has green-red-blue sockets that are linked, they sell for a chromatic orb which is a more valuable currency than the shards.

Also consider the size of the items you plan to vendor. I will almost always pickup blue rings or necklaces because the shards they are worth almost always justifies the single inventory square they occupy.

An item you are trying to use currency on cannot be equipped, and it cannot have gems in it. Other than that you just have to meet the specific requirements of that currency.

Oh, maybe that's it. I do have it equipped. I was able to use Orbs on my weapon when that was equipped, though. I'll try sticking the normal item in my inventory first.

I haven't played since the early beta days, when I got into it for a bit as a free D3 alternative. Got through the first three acts (all there was at that time) on normal and about half-way through a second run on the next difficulty setting before getting sidetracked with something else. Might pick it back up, have heard it has been almost completely redone with new stuff.

Haven't played for a good while. I got back into it and was doing really well after the last set of leagues was ending, then I started up a couple of characters in the new leagues that started in March. That means they are getting ready to end in a couple of weeks or less now, eep...

Strongboxes and out-of-depth monsters are getting added to the base game, as well as ongoing tweaks to the Vaal features, so it should be interesting going forward once the leagues are over. I look forward to seeing what the Season 9 signatures are (I think that is what will be next, 8 should have just ended) which should start coincidental with the new four-month leagues, as well as the leagues themselves.

It's a seriously great game, and I can't recommend it enough. I'm a Warrior supporter, and if I could afford it I'd be Diamond (or whatever the equivalent is now). I look forward to the next set of supporter packs, because they may let us just step upwards, or at least sidegrade this time, which would be awesome.

I still have an arseload of points sitting there from the pack... one can only have so many premium stash tabs... eh, who am I kidding, there ain't no such thing! Tab sale for the win! :twisted:
