So is most everyone playing ranger these days? Or are other classes viable/fun? I'm in the same boat as JEDI, thinking about getting back into it. But last I played was in the closed beta so I'm sure my leveled toons are gone, starting fresh and playing through normal the best path?

I'm not sure what you mean by "Normal". If you mean difficulty then everyone starts at normal and progresses through normal/cruel/merc/maps. If you mean one of the "normal leagues" as in standard or hardcore then I would say no, don't start in normal. Pick one of the temporary leagues, Bloodlines is hardcore and Torment is standard, and start there. Those leagues are where most people play and because they were reset just over a month ago they are still somewhat fresh as far as the economy goes. And then once they reset again and add the new hc/standard leagues....reroll and start again in those

This game is very alt friendly...imo thats one of the great things about it. I'm on my 4th Bloodlines toon since the league started on Dec 13th.

Agreed. I was browsing the standard league economy and...oh my god. I played nothing but ladders in d2 as well, used the 2 week breaks to test crazy builds and burn leftover currency.

8% IAS @start is very good, even for melee builds; but at high levels it doesn't make a huge difference, play whatever you want.

It's easy to make money early in temp leagues if you can build a strong character and break into maps & atziri before most people.

I've been saving this league to purchase a Windripper for an ele-crit build. Yesterday I sold a Purity of Fire level 21 for 4 ex and an awesome unlinked evasion chest for 7-8 ex. This puts me at 22 pure ex which is more than I own on standard even. Windrippers sell for 20+ exalts.

But now that I have the currency I can't seem to pull the trigger. I'm honestly not sure why since I can easily re-sell the Windripper if I don't like it. But I keep thinking about Mjolnir builds and other crazy things.

I'm about to hit 4 weeks on this game and I still have NO idea how to price and sell something. I have 1 ex and like 24 chaos. I just learned the chaos recipe. Teach me master!

You make a 6 socket item quality 20 and it supposedly doubles your chances each time you fuse it. (Armorers' scraps for armor and Whetstones for weapons)

So, did this last night on a white evasion chest I had last night just for kicks. 4 fuses later, 6L. Easy 5+ ex if I decide to keep it. I kind of want a higher iLvl to work with, but 6L is 6L I suppose.

Well, the key to selling things in PoE is to set up a shop in the forums to get the indexers to pull in your items. Most players utilize poe.trade to find gear. Once the indexers have your items you will start to get messages from players asking to trade. If I have a unique, gem, or map for trade I go to poe.trade, look up the lowest price and charge a little bit more than that.

Rares are a bit more tricky to price. It's really up to you. I recently had a 2000 evasion chest with triple 40 resists and an open slot to craft life for sale. I had people message me every day about it. I asked for 7-8 exalts for it. Some people laughed and said I over priced it. Other people simply said it was out of their range. I got 1-2 ex offers and 30 chaos offers. But yesterday I sold it for right around 7-8 exalts. So what was the chest really worth? To some people it was worth 30 chaos. To me it was worth at least 7 exalts. It's up to you how you price your rares, but you might have to drop the value to sell.

Other tips:
1. Use a 6-socket item in your weapon swap to level gems. When you level them to 20 sell them with a GCP to a vendor to receive the 20% version of that gem. You can then sell those for 20 chaos or more.
2. Or, instead, then level those 20% gems to 20 and use a vaal orb on them. They can roll up to level 21 in this case.
3. Or, instead just level aura gems to 20 and vaal them, trying to get level 21. Quality on aura gems only increases the area effect which most people dont care about.
4. Watch The state of the exile and build of the week youtube videos. Sometimes these videos start buying trends that last for most of the league.
5. Watch trade chat. Once you learn pricing and conversions for currency you can find people who want to make a quick sell. They will be offering pretty good deals that you can capitalize on. Sometimes this is flipping, but I've found flipping to be fairly difficult since often you get stuck with an item instead of currency for a few days...
6. Use one of the chaos recipes. You can sell an item from each slot over ilevel 60 to the vendor in return for a chaos (2-handed weapon, chest, amulet, 2 rings, goves, boots, helm, belt). If these items are unidentified you get 2 chaos.

If you have any other questions feel free to ask. I'm not the best at this, but I make enough currency to get by.

Dang... That's still really lucky! Congrats!

When I get something, I go to poe.xyz and search for "normalized" stats on it. Like, if it is 34 lightning resist, I search at 30%. I then sort by lowest price and if the first couple are close (a super cheap one might be an outlier), I "verify" them and price it around there depending on how quickly I want to sell it. It seems like a lot of work, but it really isn't if you're using Procurement, as you are not in the game when you're doing it.

The hardest part is finding someone to buy it and then doing the actual trade. Honestly, the auction house in Diablo 3 was amazing. People hated that thing, but it was simple and worked.

Luckily, poe.xyz or any other shop thread indexer along with Procurement really works to help people find items. You just bump your thread when you log in, and you're good. I find it to work "well enough", though I'd love an AH style tool.

I liked the AH in D3, but I recognize why it isn't in PoE. It's already very easy to gear up in PoE, and it's been nice actually building relationships with the people I trade with... However, sometimes when I'm grinding a new character it would be super nice to just pop up the AH and grab a new weapon...

It gets even more frustrating when you're looking for specific items in the end game. Like, when I need that perfect ammy that has the resists I need AND the other dps / life stats I want. I have to hope to track down and then hope that at some point, this guy with it will come online and let me buy it.

This entire idea of not having a real currency and making trading as hard as possible is just silly IMO. It doesn't add any value to the game. It seems like simply a "everyone hates the D3 AH, for no real reason, let's not have one as a selling point!" to me.

Even with that though, I can't say I don't enjoy PoE. I would just enjoy it a bit more if finding the items I want weren't as cumbersome.

I usually avoid buying those high-power items until later part of the league, when you clear a 77 in mere minutes the game actually gets pretty boring.

Yeah I already do that with the Lioneye's Glare that I have... I've just crushed maps this league, that's the only way I can afford a ripper... The only upgrade it would really give me is the quantity and rarity. I'm honestly not sure how much that even matters.

Static Strike was interesting to level, but my favorite is Leap-Slap multistrike

I always wondering if Flicker Strike was viable in a build, but never did anything to try it out.

An EK build is really fun, but I think the damage is lacking.

Well, the last time I played there really wasn't any global economy to speak of and they hadn't implemented these seasons you guys are talking about. I made it through endgame on the Normal difficulty and about halfway through the next (Cruel?) but it got very tough for a ranger with the build I chose, basically a glass cannon, would get 1-shotted by nearly any enemy. Added to this I simply couldn't find better gear and there was no trading going on, it just became no fun to continue.

So, yeah, I was asking, do most people just play through on Normal and then progress upward? Or do most play the seasons, or what?

I'd say it is likely a mix of 50/50 between 'normal' (standard and HC) and season leagues. I play standard currently, as took a break when the league started and skipped the last one due to not enjoying the mechanics and have no problems with the economy. Everyone that does the leagues doesn't seem to have a problem either (and I haven't had any when I was playing them myself). Most people simply power through the difficulties until they get to a point they can group up for Merc Docks to gain some levels before maps. I'd recommend trying to find groups to help you on the later quests (Piety etc) just to get the reward then go back to grinding up to ~68 before doing maps solo. If you're grouping, you can be a bit lower, just be careful.

weapon based characters are more gear dependent but will likely scale better late game

spell based characters are less gear dependent but won't scale as well end game

Flameblast still good enough to demolish for quite a while

poe.trade has made trading much more accessible

Exile Masters has made self found much more viable
