I've got a few friends who are into it lately but it sounds pretty bland to me, I get the impression they're just gear farming the same areas repeatedly.
thats basically the genre...

though its probably exaggerated right now in PoE as only 2 acts and league types have been released. Will get more competitive as different leagues and ladders are implemented.

The 6th character type (Shadow - Dex/Int), as well as lots of other content (possibly Act 3?) are being released this weekend. Should breathe some life into what's becoming a stale beta.

Here's the email they sent to those in the beta:

This week, we announced the Shadow, our Dexterity/Intelligence character class. He prefers to use fast-hitting weapons such as daggers or claws to dart in and out of battle, while laying Traps or Remote Mines and controlling the flow of combat with deadly spells. You can read more about the Shadow here: http://www.pathofexile.com/classes/shadow

We're opening up the Path of Exile Beta to everyone this weekend, May 11-13, so that we can stress-test our servers in preparation for entering Open Beta. This Open Weekend is the ideal time to invite your friends to play the game with you. The Shadow class will be playable from this weekend onwards.

The public weekend in March was a huge success and attracted 47,000 players. We're keen to try to push that limit! There's a list of frequently asked questions about the public weekend here: http://www.pathofexile.com/publicweekend/

Today we deployed the 0.9.9 Beta patch, which has been described as the most important patch the game has ever had. In addition to adding ten new skills, four new support gems, a new quest, monster type and many bug fixes, it introduced a completely revamped monster AI and behaviour system. We're pleased to say that these changes have made Path of Exile more fun and challenging than it has ever been before.

Due to the substantial balance changes, we have migrated all existing Beta characters and items to the Legacy League (like we did with 0.9.8) so that there's a fresh economy and ladder in both the Default and Hardcore leagues.

This is a great opportunity for you to show your friends the Path of Exile Beta and play alongside them while exploring the new updates. We're hosting developer-run events at various times over the weekend, so you can show off the skills you acquired playing earlier versions of the Beta too.

I look forward to seeing you in game!

Kind regards,
Chris Wilson

Right now it is kind of bland. It's like Diablo 3's Beta where it physically limits what you can do just for testing purposes, but they promised many other acts and leagues when the game goes to Open Beta and then again in Live.

Got the closed beta key through the store this weekend, downloaded, promptly played for almost 9 hours on Sunday afternoon/evening/night. First time I've done that in years.

And feel like I've only just scratched the surface of the skill build system, gems & equipment, etc.

Absolutely love how gear has no class restrictions, if I want to use a wand on my duelist I can do just that.

Haven't done any multiplayer yet, all my normal buddies are playing D3 instead.

Kickstarted a 10 bucks yesterday to get a beta key and help the devs.

Game is really fun for now but i'm only level 6 Templar.

Skill system is, at first, a clusterf*** of skills all over the place but after a few minutes checking around you see you can take any path in your character development. It's still a bit overwhelming but at the same time I love having lots of choices.

One thing that puts me off a bit is the clumsy gameplay and sounds. When you click on a mob to attack it, it doesn't feel right...maybe it's the slow animation or the bad sound effects but something's not right in that regard.

Overall though, it's a great game and glad I give a little money to them so they can deliver a cool and entertaining game.

I love Path of Exile and in many ways it's what Diablo III should have been.

Although the characters are pretty ugly, and I am not a huge fan of the camera angle, this is really where all the cons end.

This game is a lot of fun, and I love the skill system, the character development, the items, etc etc.. Whats great about this game is that it's actually VERY FUN, and I don't see any characters that are boring or bland. None of the characters feel underpowered either. I started a Witch and played her for a while because I love the sorc/mage class and because everyone says she's best. While that may be true, I quickly realized that I missed out when I played with the Shadow and with the Berserker.

Many folks were complaining that the Shadow is underpowered... That's complete bullshit. I owned many bosses with a few hits while it took me forever to kill the same bosses with the sorc... err.. witch. Perhaps it's about resistances, since I'm all ice on my witch and many bosses are resistant to ice, but still. So far the Shadow and the Berserker do not seem to have any trouble dispatching anything quikly, resistances or not.

Only 2 acts? I don't see that as a problem because somehow I am not getting bored yet. I only recently got into Cruel mode, so there's plenty of game-play stil left.

I am just a little saddened, that for $10, I got a hell of a lot more fun and gameplay than for $60 in the case of Diablo III.

Good call ibex!

The camera, I can live with it and you're getting used to really quickly. Character models are, like you say, pretty ugly but I dig the Templar model, old dude with gray beard, fitting.

My cons are those: Combat and combat sound effects. It feels clumsy and unfinished imo. It's not at snappy and quicky as say Diablo 3 or even Titan Quest. Your character slowly swings his weapon and a bland sound can be heard...needs polishing a bit in that area to be elevated a bit more.

Overall, great game that i'll surely play for a while!

Game is pretty good, i am not sure how i feel about the barter system, i like a more traditional gold or currency based economy. Outside of that i like it though, skill system with gems is a interesting change and the talent system is overwhelming to say the least at first but i like it.

I donated $25 bucks at beta ended to play a bit more even though D3 was out and TL II beta was going.

Its a good time to be a ARPG fan, with those 3 and Grim Dawn in the works.

I find it really sad that this is the only game of the genre out there that even attempts to keep that gothic feel of the original Diablo...

Every game nowadays suffers from what I call "WoWization", so they all end up looking like cartoony clones of each other, its horrible... Why does no one understand what made D1 and D2 so great? (especially D1)

Even Blizzard has completely lost it, sigh... I hope this game will be a success if anything so others will follow and revive the genre

Well, its not the same Blizzard who made those games so... Its not that they lost it, its that they lost the people who had it....

I wouldnt mind playing PoE. I thought that weekend trial was decent. I dislike their illogical barter system and they need to figure out a better way to coop with players than the poor implementation I saw, but past that it looked like it could be fun in a diablo1 sorta way.

Personally, Grim Dawn is the only ARPG that I'm looking forward to because I feel it's returning to the roots of this genre, with dark gritty graphics, fast-paced action, and no-hands-holding. Too bad, it's slated for release August 2013 or something like that, so some other ARPG will have to tide us over in the mean time.

Well, theres PoE, Torchlight 2 and Diablo3, pick one.

Considering this after playing D3 through hell on an underpowered WD. Don't feel like "going shopping" to make my toon inferno-ready. If I wanted to buy new shoes, I'd go to the mall with my wife. Last I checked, I play these games to get away from that stuff.

Any other longtime Diablo players here care to weigh in on this game? Is it worth playing?

After a break for Diablo 3 I am about ready to come back to PoE, it just feels like a more interesting game in the long term with build variety and a superior hardcore mode.

Only thing keeping me away right now is lack of time.

PoE is a lot like D2 with some cool things added. Honestly this is what D3 should of been, not the turd we got. Hell it looks more like Diablo then D3 does.

I like the idea of the duelist. I bet way too many people roll one.

We should get a list of AT forumgoers when this thing goes live.

ive been playing d3 since release, but still looking forward to coming back to PoE when it goes live. Torchlight 2 may throw a wrench into that, but I think PoE has more elements that will keep bringing me back.
