6800Ultra - 72W burn / 29W idle
X800XT PE - 63W burn / 18W idle

9800XT - 60W burn / 38W idle
FX5950 - 73W burn / 20W idle


As much if not more? Yes in idle terms of the 9800XT, but in everything else they pull less, 10W less in pretty much every case.

Never knew that, i though our 6800 Ultras were the big baddies, with min PSU rating and advised to use 2 seperate rails, but the X850 PE's came out later to try counteract the Ultra or Ultra E it was X800's at time Ultra was launched only

Some sites conflict this though i only run new ATI card to test i dont and wont use for myself, i stay with Nvidia camp but skipped FX.

I not really got issues with how much juice it needs solongs i can get a PSU to suit and its not too noisey in my case, i feel dual slot is the way for all cards soon to get hot air out case not left for cpu fan to suck in before going out rear case fan, even card that can suck cool in air from outside and exhaust outside to, nearest you would get to that now would be the Antec gpu cooler (takes 2 slots) and the 5800ultra pos) or newer ATI (sorry only 2 i know that take hot air outside) or use a NV silencer (again these options take 2 slots so you will lose 4 slots in total and maybe need skip one between both devices so 5 slots.

There are other reviews posted in this forum somewhere that show the XT PE drawing more power. So we cannot really say X draws more power than Y unless we have numbers from the companies or somebody does a truly scientific test.

1) ATi's top end sucks more juice than NV's top end


2) I don't think anyone has license to complain about cards that perform within 10-20 watts of one another under load. If your power supply is so pushed to the limit that 10-20 watts makes a difference in stability, you deserve to have your system melt.

As far as I'm concerned, 10 - 20 watts on a 400-500W power supply means the same thing as 10-20 FPS in a 400-500FPS bench of Quake 3 - nothing.

I call NV and ATi equal in power consumption, and frankly, I agree with Trinibwoy - I think a lot of people out there bash NV just because it's en vogue.

And hopefully ATi will take note that that is what you are supposed to do when you have a scorching hot chip. I have had my alarm for my AGP thermal probe shut off for the last year as ATi's disgustingly poor HS/F combo isn't close to enough to cool the R9800Pro. Actually- if not for dual 80mm RPM fans directly blowing air in/out right next to the card it it would crash regularly when stressed(have verified this repeatedly). The board operates within spec temperatures, I would gladly trade a little bit more dB for adequate levels of cooling.

BTW- this board isn't overclocked a single Hz.

MetalStorm, Im 33 and i learned that crappy kiddie L33t talk on irc, i still stand by him being a dumb m00ther f00ker, for calling me one as he 100% invented what he claims i said about a 6800Ultra having 430mhz core.

I was compairing the so called new nvidia flagship to a 6800Ultra and stating i doubt a flagship will have 430mhz core as its only 5mhz more thsn current, i know there will be another card launched after ATI launch.

Anyhow im past worrying WTF anyone here or elsewhere thinks, fact is no 1 person outside Nvidia has a damn clue what the cards gonna look like or mhz of core or any other aspects that are flying around WWW as rumours.

All i know is im going to get a replacement for my 6800U as of PvP and it has to be agp and i wont accept this new G70 which is not gonna cost same £410 i paid for the Ultra in Nov 04. (i will let Chaintech and Nvidia fight that out themselves).

6800 ultra is only 425mhz core.

The 6800U spec is 400 MHz. Of course various "OC" derivatives may go higher than this.

It sounds like you may have a faulty card then seeing as thousands of other people don't appear to have any problems with heat on that card. Have you tried cleaning the HSF? It might be dusty or something.

Back on topic: I don't really care what the actual specs of the G70 are, so long as it's competitive, as that's what matters to me, the consumer.

Without competition, prices will shoot up - the cost of developing these cards is far from cheap. So good competition between the manufacturers is essential.
