Actuarial Careers?

I'm a recenty business economics major with a minor in management. I'm considering doing this. Can anyone offer any insight?

It depends on how good at math you are. Business economics usually means you're not taking a lot of math, so actuarial work is going to hit you pretty hard.

The work itself is, well, evaluating risk. Careers are fairly well structured, most companies using actuaries basically give a promotion or a raise for each actuarial exam you pass. Insurance is probably the biggest landing spot, although actuaries work in all sorts of financial services.

If you decide it's for you though, take more math. Minor in it. Basically, go talk to your favorite econ professor and mention this, and ask what math would be needed if you were to prepare for a graduate economics degree. That's how much you want to take in undergrad.

I have a BBA in Economics and considered this path out of college, but decided I wanted to go to law school instead. I was minoring in math at the time (missed it by like 6 credits, I lost interest). I ended up working in insurance as a data analyst, though, and routinely interacted w/ actuaries. Brilliant people, but their work seemed pretty boring

That's why I'm in management consulting, its less boring.

haha forgot I posted this here. What kind of "boring" work were these actuaries doing?

As far as the math is concerned, I dont think this is an issue. I was a computer engineering major and math major at one point, I have a firm grasp on math.

actuaries could be a booming business.

consider all the baby boomers nearing retirement. many of them will benefit from their company's qualified pension plan, thus increasing demand for actuary work
